TRAX - A Chaos Engine inspiration for the Atari XL/XE looks mighty impressive

The original Chaos Engine was an incredible game released in 1993, and developed by the very famous Bitmap Brothers. It was a well known title that at its core, was for the Amiga in which one or two players battled in a top down shooter genre against the evil creations of the titular Chaos Engine. With four landscapes to traverse and weapons to use it was an extremely popular game on any system. But today's news is very interesting for fans of the game, as Shanti77 has entered his Atari XL/XE Chaos Inspiration for the ABBUC competition 2022 called TRAX.

Game starts around 0:30

Although it's still very early days and we are unsure if this is going to be turned into a full game at any point soon, as only one level is being shown. The developer has noted regarding developments, that it features different enemies to defeat, items to pick up, keys to collect, decent sound effects, the possibility of new levels to play through, and all of this developed with an engine that can display up to 8 software sprites in 25 fps. So yes certainly one that all Atari XL/XE owners should keep an eye out for when it gets an eventual public release.

  2. Interesting. The inspiration was clearly Chaos Engine, but the partial result looks more like a Gauntlet with guns.

    1. But was'nt Chaos Engine a steam Punk Gauntlet clone anyway? And even if Gauntlet was'nt the only inspiration it was certainly the main one , so no surprises in that matter.

  4. Looks good so far. The sprite movements should be made a little bit faster, like it is in the Amiga, Mega-Drive and Super-NES versions of the game. Looking forward to the finalized game here.
