Popeye VBXE - Another arcade port, but this time it's coming to the Atari XL/XE with VBXE!

Now here's a blast from the past, as we've just been informed that the classic Arcade game of 'Popeye', is coming to the Atari XL/XE with a VBXE as an Arcade conversion by woj. In a similar vein to Donkey Kong albeit not as good, you play as Popeye and must collect hearts, musical notes and the letters H-E-L-P that the lovable character Olive drops from the top of the screen. But be warned, just like the cartoon, Brutus will get in your way with the help of the bad Sea Hag!

Work in Progress Video.

In brief here is what the creator says about Popeye when it was first announced back in Feb for the Atari XL/XE VBXE. "I am actually a bit hesitant to start the topic not to jinx it, and that early in the project too, but I figured it would motivate me to go on with this. My plan - do a 1:1 replica of Arcade Popeye on VBXE". And that's the main gist of the game, but for further information such as the very latest coding developments, head on over to the forums located (here) or download the game (here).

  1. Looks more like 7800 homebrew version than the 5200 homebrew version. At least the size of the characters which is more like the dimensions of the arcade. I have 2 versions of this game already but this looks better. This was the other game besides Donkey Kong I couldn’t wait to play in the arcades as a kid. Funny how the history of the 2 games just happens to be connected. Stay tuned for this one. Looks like a port worth my time.

  2. I just don't see the point of this, when I can play the original in MAME.
Why not do something original with the excellent VBXE ?

    1. That’s not the point. If you don’t appreciate what goes on these projects take your whining elsewhere.
These are ports for other systems. They push the limits and show what could have been or what wasn’t possible yesterday. The hard work involved and the use of the hardware is compelling. Some of these arcade ports have been impressive. The Donkey Kong Jr. port for the Commodore 64 is fantastic. This Popeye port looks really good. If you want an extra level go play the Amiga homebrew but don’t expect the more impressive visuals of this one.
