Here's another Arcade-like game for you to enjoy, as Tom Gun Software has released Astro Invasion, a fast paced new space shooter designed to put your reflexes to the test. Drawing heavy inspiration from Stern’s beloved 1979 arcade classic Astro Invader, the game throws players straight into the cockpit of a lone starfighter tasked with holding the line against an aggressive alien mothership and its endless, descending swarms. What makes this release particularly impressive is its performance; the entire game is written 100% in pure machine code, delivering buttery-smooth, lightning-fast action whether you choose to command your ship using a keyboard or a classic joystick.
According to the developer while the game is presented in a crisp, high-definition black and white layout on other vintage systems, Amstrad CPC owners get the exclusive luxury of playing the space battles in full, colour. Tom Gun Software has gone the extra mile too, to ensure cross-platform harmony, making the release universal across the Dragon 32, Dragon 64, Dragon by Tano, Tandy Color Computer, and Amstrad CPC. Both PAL and NTSC formats run at identical speeds, and players on the Dragon and CoCo machines will also benefit from automated keyboard mapping.

Anyone get the Dragon version to run? CoCo one works (with dodgy analogue controls) but the Dragon one just hangs after you type EXEC, both the disk and tape versions.
ReplyDeleteAre you running on real hardware or an emulator? If on hardware, is it a Dragon 32, Dragon 64, Dragon 200, Dragon 200E or Dragon by Tano? Does it hang before or after showing the results of the PAL/NTSC and DRAGON/CoCo check is displayed? Regarding the analog joystick controls, what are you experiencing? Too wide or narrow deadzone? Are the keyboard controls OK (space to fire and right/left arrow keys)?
DeleteAre you using original hardware or an emulator. In any case which model of Dragon or which emulator? Regarding the analog joystick controls, what are you experiencing as dodgy? Too wide or narrow deadzone? Are the keyboard controls (righ/left/space) working ok? Any detailed feedback are appreciated, and bugs will be fixed as soon as possible. Thank you.
DeleteI'm emulating it via MAME (libretro version). My bad on the CoCo version, I was starting it with the wrong button. Using the right one makes the controls digital, so all good there. As for the Dragon, not sure what you mean by the "check", but it appears to load normally, with the flashing S and F symbols, then ends with OK and the flashing cursor as usual. It's when I type EXEC that the screen just freezes forever.
ReplyDeleteUpdate: works fine if I set it to Dragon 64. Terrific port, by the way - the Amstrad version in particular is phenomenally accurate, only needs an enemy-kill sound effect to be basically perfect :)
