Street Fighter II - An improved version of a classic fighting game is coming to the Amiga via AI and Str1der

I'm sure many of you remember the Street Fighter games, more especially Street Fighter 2; a game which originally appeared on the Arcades, and was then ported to pretty much every system you could think of, including such systems as the Amiga, Atari St and even the ZX Spectrum.  Well fast forward to today however, and a developer by the name of Str1der with the help of AI, is working on an improved version of Street Fighter 2 for the AMIGA to bring it more in line with the Arcades and better than the original US Gold port released in the 90s.

ECS

AGA

According to the EAB thread, Str1der is completely rewriting Street Fighter II from scratch. This latest iteration promises to be the definitive version, packing in all original stages, fully functional two-player joystick controls, corrected bugs, and the iconic bonus stages. By utilizing AI as a strategic asset to optimize development, Str1der has overhauled the engine to deliver much fast blitting speeds that consistently hit a smooth 50 frames per second. The visual upgrade is looking pretty decent as well, featuring graphics ripped directly from the PC-Engine, an optimized color palette using up to 45 colors on OCS/ECS (and up to 80 on AGA) without even touching the copper, and an uncompromised animation budget featuring all 250 frames for every fighter. Lasty, the developer is also actively encouraging players to test the game and report any remaining bugs, emphasizing their dedication to delivering a version of Street Fighter II that does not dissapoint.
  • Amiga 68000, ECS, 1mb chip and 2 mb fast at 50 fps
  • Wide sprites (mimic PC Engine TV stretch), full speed on 68020 ECS or a faster 68000 like an ACA500 card
  • Amiga AGA 68020, 2mb chip and some fast RAM

  1. Here it is—one of my dreams: a good SF2 port.
It already looks decent, but it needs a lot of work. I hope Str1der, is a programmer, will be able to fix a lot of things. The version we saw a while back, made by humans, was definitely better.

    1. Well, this is great. The two versions here move very quickly and smoothly and the characters animated very well.

However, I must question the claim of the number of colours being displayed on screen. OCS looks like it's in 16 colours - nowhere near the 45 claimed. Similarly, the AGA version looks like 32 colours - not 80.

Are they planning to put more colours in later? It's a very strange claim (45/80 colours "without touching the copper"???) - especially when you can see there are no extra colours at all. Why make that claim, then?

  3. Very impressively good so far, but it needs a lot more work.

  4. I really can't see any difference between the AGA and the ECS port.
And why is it that parallax scrolling seems imposible on the Amiga for this game?

  5. Yes yes yes yes! Proof that the Amiga OCS can do it - or at least - get the game to be on par with the Megadrive version (which was how it should have been when it was released).

I wonder if the final version will include animated background....
