The Legend of Zelda - Nintendo's hit game comes to the Commodore 64 via Goldfinger

The iconic NES classic The Legend of Zelda is making its way to the Commodore 64, thanks to a dedicated new port by developer Goldfinger. Built using Aldo Núñez’s commented Assembly source code from GitHub, this project aims to cram Nintendo's massive adventure onto an Easy Flash 3 cartridge. While Goldfinger’s current build slightly exceeds the original NES version's 128 KB limit, they plan to optimize and claw back precious memory during development. The game features full NTSC and PAL auto-detection, and features a complete overworld, dungeon levels, scrolling rooms, functional item screens, and progress saving directly to the cartridge.

Though the developer playfully describes the retro graphics as "lame," the port does have music, sound effects, an authentic attract-mode intro, and complete save-file character creation. Looking ahead, Goldfinger hopes to eventually implement native 1541 floppy disk support to mirror the game's original release on Nintendo's Famicom Disk System. While there are still a few minor bugs to iron out during upcoming playtests, the creator has noted that while game speeds are basically on par with the NES. And there's more to come, it's possible the C64 version could even play with no slowdowns (unlike the NES). Finally the developer's biggest hurdle may be legal; though Goldfinger wants to release the complete source code so the community can improve or repurpose the engine, copyright concerns regarding Nintendo's intellectual property leave the official public release up in the air.
