2017 Retro Calendar by ChinnyVision.

Youtuber ChinnyVision, who specializes in reviewing games from the golden 8-bit generation, has produced a rather neat and tidy 2017 retro themed calendar. Featuring many of the 8-bit systems of the 80's, each month highlights a classic game such as Chase HQ or Bomb Jack 2, and how it looked on different formats of the day. As an Amstrad fan, Chinny gives the CPC a lot of coverage, but equally so to the Spectrum and Commodore, comparing screenshots side by side. Other systems pop up now and then such as the MSX, BBC Micro and C16. Wonderfully printed and clearly defined, this calendar is a must for retro gamers everywhere. For more information, watch my in-depth review of the product. Certainly makes counting the days a lot more interesting and fun.

Star Raiders II - Unreleased almost-finished sequel sees light of day on the Atari 8bit!

This is the unreleased, almost-finished sequel to Star Raiders for the Atari 8-bits, created and developed by him while working in the R&D lab of Atari coin-op.

Cathedral - A NES-inspired 8-bit adventure you might want to see

Putting aside all those Greenlight successes and back to my 8-bit ways, Decemberborn was kind enough to give us a shout out about their new game ' Cathedral, the 8-bit adventure ', that is inspired by the great NES console as an adventure and exploration RPG! Yes indeed a NES style game, and if that game Shovel Knight was anything to go by, people will be all over this like Mario to a stash of coins!

Pico-8 : An 8 bit fantasy console from the makers of Voxatron (IRN Cracktro special!)

For the last couple of weeks I've been playing around with a "fantasy console" from makers of voxatron, lexaloffle. This review was supposed to be a quick report of a cool looking toy I found for making retro style games and prototypes or game jam entries. It started with an innocent posting that made it to the front page of Hacker News, and a quick glance indicated it would be suitable fodder for Indie Retro News. A quick round up of what was going on with some screenshots. Yeah, I'd have this wrapped up in a day. What I didn't expect was what I discovered...

Crystal Kingdom Dizzy - Classic Dizzy is back and he's out of beta

Dizzy fans have we got news for you as we've just heard from the YolkFolk, of the final release for the remake of  'Crystal Kingdom Dizzy'. First released in 1992 on many different systems by Codemasters such as the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, DOS, and Amiga, has now been given a graphical de-make to the likes of the 8 bit classics. Not just that but unlike the original version, this one has been made into a traditional Dizzy style game and is no longer split into four levels.

Street Fighter II - The REAL CPC Edition is in development!

Cast your minds way back to 1992 when Capcom's eagerly awaited beat em up ' Street Fighter 2 ' finally appeared on the C64 and ZX Spectrum. At least a year and a half later if not more , the Amstrad version was supposed to be coming to the Amstrad CPC, at least according to Amstrad Action. Yet for some reason, perhaps the development was scrapped it never appeared. Many years later, a homebrew port from the Gameboy version did appear on the Amstrad CPC by Hermol but many felt that it wasn't a true reflection of the Amstrad's detail. Fast forward to 2013-2015 and a very impressive homebrew remake titled 'Street Fighter II - CPC Edition' is being developed by DaDMaN, McKlain and AugustoRuiz for the Amstrad CPC 6128 (128Kb RAM).

Horizon Chase - An Arcade love letter to the 16bit era!

Long ago in the days of the 8-bit and 16-bit era, people around the world played on Arcade machines or on their home computer, racing around tracks with the feeling of intense speed just to become the number 1. From games such as Outrun or the famous series of games Lotus and XJ220 on the Amiga it was a time I remember fondly. But what if I was to tell you of a game called 'Horizon Chase' developed by AquirisGS that is a homage to the 80s and early 90s classic racing games, would you be interested? I think you would, but there's more...

Cosmic Prison Commando - HQ Amstrad CPC style game in development!

Over 4 years ago Carnivac first mentioned his Amstrad CPC styled shooter 'Cosmic Prison Commando' to the retro gaming community for the PC. Yet it wasn't until much later (2014?) that Carnivac decided to overhaul his game and turn it into a much more impressive looking title that is still in development even today. Classed as a flick-screen platformer with shooting, punching and puzzles involved. Cosmic Prison Commando was originally developed very much like Turrican but has evolved over the years into less of a Turrican-lite and more a mixture of a lot of his favourite games such as SwitchBlade, Ratchet & Clank and others.

Sam's Journey - Colourful 8-bit platformer in development for the C64

Welcome to Sam's Journey; a C64 title developed by Knights of Bytes, which is about a cute little hero called Sam who finds himself on an unexpected journey in a strange world.

Crystal Kingdom Dizzy - DizzyAGE Community Project (11th Jan update)

Dizzy fans it's time to rejoice once more, as the latest January update has been made available for the DizzyAGE community project remake of 'Crystal Kingdom Dizzy'. The original CKD was first released in 1992 on a multitude of systems in a completely different graphical pallet than we were used to. It also had less involvement from The Oliver Twins and depending on who you asked, there were many who didn't like the original Crystal Dizzy game over previous Dizzy adventures.

Yesterday for example saw the announcement of Maxwell Mouse and The Missing Game Mystery; a flip-screen platform/adventure game with influences from Dizzy and old 8-bit platformers.

DaXX - Retro musical tribute !

As many of you know we are very fond of game retro remixes, especially from the Amstrad, Amiga, C64 or ZX Spectrum. So today's post is a tribute to the great daXX; a legend in the remix 64 scene who creates both Amiga and C64 remixes. Bert Brüggemann (Aka daXX) was born in 1976 in Germany and even at the early age of 6 he was creating music from a keyboard, then as he got older the C64 and the Amiga. Releasing over 500 Amiga mods and remixes, with Soundtracker and Protracker I'd rate him one of the best re-mixers of our time. So rather than post every track he's ever done, I'll be posting his best work from Youtube...... Enjoy!
