XYDONIA - High quality shoot 'em up looks to impress! (+Demo)
Move over R-Type, step aside Project-X, as a new shoot 'em up is pushing its way into the action blasting genre at full force! It's 'XYDONIA' developed by Breaking Bytes; a game inspired by the horizontal scrolling Japanese arcade classics of the 90's, with lots of different enemies, moving backgrounds, powerful weaponry and a cool soundtrack all contained within a game of great retro styled pixels.
Brutal Doom 64 - Enhanced Doom 64 gets new alpha footage!
Throughout last year and into this one, we've been featuring many of SGtMarkIV's release updates for Brutal Doom, which as we said before was pretty much the bloodiest Doom mod we've come across, with more gibs and guts than you could ever need in a first person shooter. But now after some hinting, the same creator has moved onto ' Brutal Doom 64 ', which according to SGt, "revitalizes the old Doom 64 with new special effects, particles, lightning, gore, new sounds, more weapon animations (shotgun reloads, smoother minigun barrels, etc.) and monsters and stuff cut from the original Nintendo 64 version". To coincide with this news, a new alpha footage tease has been released, and from what we've seen looks rather good!
Balloon Girl - Tap your way through an endless loop for the Atari 2600
Another homebrew mention for this week but this time it's from theloon for the Atari 2600, is an in development homage to Balloon Fight on the NES called ' Balloon Girl '. This game looks closer to Flappy Bird rather than Balloon Fight as you must avoid obstacles in a constant side scrolling loop with only a one button control method at your disposal. By simply tapping this button this keeps your girl in the air while obstacles and enemies come at you from the right hand side. The further you travel, the higher your score!
Wonderboy in Monster Land SE - Alpha Amiga enhancement of a retro platformer
When I was a wee lad spending all my money down at the Arcades, one such game I used to love was that fantastic platformer ' Wonder Boy ' designed by Ryuichi Nishizawa. It started its life as a skateboard rock jumping and axe bashing platformer, that later became the adventure platformer with RPG elements ' Wonderboy in Monster Land ' that many of us know and love to this day. I myself mainly played it on the Amiga and although it was addictive as hell it suffered from being a straight Atari ST port with poor colours and long loading times. Thankfully our good friend Earok is now working on a ' Wonderboy in Monster Land SE ' version with more than just palette improvements.
8-bit Civilizations - Ambitious project for a Civilizations inspired C64 game!
Good morning retro gamers, have we got a special Monday announcement for you! A Lemon64 member by the name of DrKhumalo has teased a work in progress Civilization style game for the C64, as ' 8-bit Civilizations '. Now I'm sure many of you have heard of the highly addictive management game called 'Civilization' by Microprose, well this developer who is a huge fan of such games including Master of Magic has always been disappointed that there was nothing like it for the C64, at least until now.
Heroes Rescue! - Defecto Digital teases the next Amstrad CPC game!
Defecto Digital are back with another game, as after releasing their previous game ELF which was an adventure based on the arcade version released by Ocean Software in 1992, has now teased the next game in their Amstrad line up. This time an arcade platformer and called ' Heroes Rescue! ' is being developed using AGD and will star none other than the character FRY from Futurama. In this early development tease testing Scroll and Sprites, it shows Fry avoiding enemies, jumping across platforms and finally, rescuing heroes, that originally appeared in both TV series and Movies.
Knightlore - Ultimate Play the Game classic appears on the Amiga! (WIP)
Although I am not a fan of the Ultimate Play the Games, even if they still do have a huge cult following and classed as a great collectors item. We couldn't help but notice the Amiga port of ' Knightlore ' which has since been made available as an early work in progress by tcdev. Originally a 1984 action-adventure by Ultimate Play the Game, this was an isometric title and written by company founders Chris and Tim Stamper. It was also available for the ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, Amstrad CPC, MSX and Famicom Disk System!
Tower 57 - Retro inspired shooter gets slick gifs and an alpha update!
After all the pushing and persuading we did for Benitosub and Cyangmou's 16-bit shooter ' Tower 57 ' ; which is an arcade love child of Alien Breed and Chaos Engine, we are pleased to show the game off again with brand new gifs and an alpha update. This recent Steam Greenlight and Kickstarter success for PC, MAC and even an Amiga port appeared in our news feed today, as the developers had sent out an mail to specific Alpha-tier (and above) backers containing the download link for their very first Alpha build. ( Warning gif heavy )
Dragon's Castle - Arcade platformer in development for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive
TrekMD from RVG has informed the retro gaming community of a new homebrew arcade platformer that is currently in development for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. Developed by 'Sik' and titled Dragon's Castle, this looks to be a 2D side scrolling game where you play as a Witchy hero armed with a hard hitting broom that has to avoid traps and deadly enemies such as ghosts and spiders, while also trying to reach each exit.
Day of the Tentacle - Amiga Adventuring CD32 Alpha release!
Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world. It was just a shame that this amazing adventure with world renown was never officially ported over to the Amiga, unless of course you downloaded the unofficial Amiga AGA version of DOTT which is linked (here). But this news release isn't about the PC version or the Amiga AGA version, but a very early work in progress Amiga CD32 release, that thanks to our good friend Earok has been released as an Alpha.
Ultimate Play The Game : Pentagram - WIP port release for the Atari 8bit
Although I am not a fan of the Ultimate Play the Games, even if they still do have a huge cult following with some titles going over £100 on Ebay. We couldn't help but notice the work in progress Atari 8bit port of ' Pentagram ' which is being ported from the ZX Spectrum version by mariusz and made available since yesterday. Originally released by Ultimate Play The Game in 1986. It is the fourth in the Sabreman series, following on from his adventures in Sabre Wulf, Underwurlde and Knight Lore.
Z-Exemplar - Retro inspired ZX Spectrum R-Type demo update!
Throughout this year we've been featuring Suminell Studios upcoming ZX Spectrum style Shoot em up of ' Z-Exemplar ', which as of yet hasn't gained enough support for a Steam Greenlight success. In development for Android, iOS, PC and Mac, it has the look of an R-Type, Gradius and Nemesis clone while combining bright, clashing 8-bit pixel ZX Spectrum detail but with frantic action and a classic loading squealer! To further push for a success, the developers have now released an updated Pre-Alpha Demo of which you can download below the trailer.
RESHOOT: A new Amiga shoot´em-up coming 2016
Announced via our Commodore Amiga Facebook group, is the latest in development Shoot 'em up to wow the Amiga community. Coming to the A1200, A4000 and CD32, ' RESHOOT ' as it's known, is being coded by Richard Löwenstein, with music by Adam Morton and pixel design by Kevin Saunders that looks down right impressive. Currently in development by a very small team, which has its heart in Landsberg, Bavaria, Germany, the developers are aiming to have the game out in 2016, and to coincide with this news, they have also released new footage.
Z-Exemplar - Retro inspired ZX Spectrum R-Type gets a new demo & trailer!
One of the most eagerly awaited games that we have featured so far in that retro style, just has to be Suminell Studios upcoming Shoot em up ' Z-Exemplar ', which is still aiming for a Steam Greenlight success. In development for Android, iOS, PC and Mac, it has the look of an R-Type, Gradius and Nemesis clone while combining bright, bold, 8-bit pixel ZX Spectrum detail but with frantic action and an epic mission to conquer a galaxy of almost 1000 planets. To coincide with this news, the developers have not only released an early alpha demo, but also a kick ass trailer!
GogoPogo - Early build of LuMan's Amiga platformer
There wont be that many news stories today due to a family issue, however I thought I'd give a quick mention to Luis Ogando's smooth scrolling Amiga platformer of ' GogoPogo ' . Which was released as an early demo build today and playable on a 1MB system. In this game you play as Pogo and must pick up items and hop around the level while also avoiding deadly enemies and traps such as the nasty life ending electric floor!
Motorman Preview - An early tease of a fun C64 arcade release!
I'm sure many of you remember the NES game Excitebike, in which you raced along a side scrolling dirt track against other racers doing high speed jumps. Well that same styled game has appeared on the C64 as a very early prototype. Developed by Leigh and released by Excess, ' Motorman Preview ' is a game that even at this early stage is looking to be one of the most enjoyable games in development.
NeuroVoider - Twin stick shooter gets an alpha release
Game Type : Action / Shooter
Developer : Flying Oak Games

Battle through the horde of vigilant robots, boost your character with the smoking remains of your victims, and defeat the master NeuroVoider to end this eternal war. Behemoth Preview - A shooter of an Armalyte C64 clone!
Another Onslaught crack today and this one is a little bit special for those of you who remember the awesome C64 shooter 'Armalyte', released way back in 1988. Although this is not a full game with only level 1 as 100% complete and the others half that, 'Behemoth Preview' supplied by Jazzcat is classed as an Armalyte clone that was originally meant for the budget label, however the game was never finished because the crew went over to the Amiga. Now thanks to Onslaught you can play the first level and test out the others, but be warned, as we said it isn't finished.
MegaSphere - Action sci-fi and impressive pixels gets a demo
After our previous feature of Anton Kudin's epic looking pixelated action sci-fi of 'MegaSphere', the developer hasn't just announced the availability of a PC/MAC/Linux demo, but the game is also available to pre-order with early access release on Steam! Featuring oodles of pure blasting action, a mighty upgradable weapon, tough AI enemies, randomized levels, physics based platforming and robotic enemies, MegaSphere is all about the sci-fi and damn does it look good!
Spaced Out Preview - Early Alpha of an unfinished C64 release
Another release by Laxity today is Steve Morrow's 1992 C64 game of 'Spaced Out', which is now available as a very early almost non playable preview. According to a member by the name of Goat on the CSDb site, this game was only shown as a YouTube video, yet Laxity was able to find the source code, repair it, debug and release. However don't expect much from this game(?) as apart from a few screens and a moving shooting character, there's really not much that can be done.
