In 1984 a great shoot 'em up was released for the Arcade by Capcom and that game was 1942. A game in which you had to shoot down enemy planes, avoid being shot out of the sky and performed awesome rolls while collecting power ups. Well if you remember this fine game ( I know I do! ), you may be interested to know that Al Nafuur has not only released a work in progress demake of the game for the Atari 2600 developed in Batari Basic, but it looks mighty impressive indeed!
Commando appears on the Atari XL/XE using enhanced VBXE capabilities!
Saberman has yet again contacted us to let us know that Shanti77 has released the final version of his previously announced work in progress C64 to Atari XL/XE VBXE conversion of Commando. As in the words of Shanti77 "How does the game conversion from C64 to Atari using VBXE look like, the author has little knowledge of the C64 architecture, but is learning ;) When I found the described source code for this game on C64, I thought it would be a pity not to use it".
Scorch - A Scorched Earth clone gets another preview for the Atari XL/XE
This game might not look like much, with its bare backgrounds and tiny coloured objects, but this is actually a NEW preview Atari XL/XE release, that comes across very much like Scorched Tanks on the Amiga and the MS-DOS game Scorched Earth. Developed by pirx and as a multiplayer game with up to 2 players so far, your ultimate goal is to wipe out your opponent by working out the correct trajectory that your Baby Missile flies through the air and hits dead on target!

Abu Simbel Profanation - A highly challenging 8bit platformer has been ported to the Atari XL/XE
Prepare to scream profanity at your keyboard because one of the "most difficult games of Spanish Software History" has just been converted to the Atari XL/XE by Felipe De Toro, it's "Abu Simbel Profanation". The third in the Johnny Jones Saga which was originally released in 1985 for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and MSX. The game was developed by Victor Ruiz and released by Dinamic Software in Spain (and Gremlin Graphics throughout the rest of Europe).
Laserball - A 2014/15 brain-cracking puzzle game for the ATARI ST/STe/Falcon now available on itch io!
Anarcholab has released some great Atari ST/STE and Falcon games, games such as Randominer and RANDOMAZER are just two of the ones we've featured just recently that are worth checking out. Well here we are with another developer feature, as thanks to Saberman contacting us today, he has told us that Anarcholab has made available their 2014/2015 game of Laserball via the itch io website. A brain-cracking puzzle game for the ATARI ST/STe/Falcon of which is also well worth a play!
Gacek - A Bomb Jack port for the Atari XL/XE (+VBXE) is finally here and it's fab!
In the late 80's I played the brilliant Arcade port ' Bomb Jack '; a game that required you the player to jump and float about getting rid of all the bombs on the screen before they are used to blow up historic places of interest. It was such an awesome game that as of today you can download the final version of the excellent Bomb Jack port of 'Gacek' for both the Atari XL/XE and +VBXE by Shanti77. To coincide with this news Saberman has done a new video for you showing the gameplay of this new game.

We've featured a lot of specials on Indie Retro News, from the Arcade like conversion of Puzzle Bubble to the fabulous Supremacy 30th Anniversary Edition on the C64. Well here we are with another big hitter, as if you remember the classic Mastertronic game of 'Amaurote'; a game which was originally released on the Amstrad CPC, Atari 8-bit, C64, MSX, ZX Spectrum and Electronika BK 0011M in 1987. Then you'll be overjoyed to learn that as of today, Elysium has released their own C64 conversion of the game which as you'll read below, takes the best bits of the Atari 8bit version and more!
Bombwatch - A new MineSweeper style game for the Atari ST

WordUp! - A work in progress teaser for the Atari ST(E) inspired by the 90's game of Atomix!
The games just keep on coming, as thanks to a heads up yesterday from our good friend Saberman, he has told us that Spagetticoder has released an early work in progress version of 'WordUp!' for the Atari ST(E). According to the creator, this game is a Puzzle Game inspired by Atomix and is available to download linked below requiring 2MB Ram or more to run. To coincide with this news, Saberman has also done a video of the game itself giving you a taste of the upcoming full version.

It was such an awesome game that even though a fan port of the game was released on the Atari XL/XE coded by Krzysztof Gora in 2008, another version looks to be in the works and this one is called Gacek and developed by Shanti77. Troll's Treasure - A family friendly Adventure game by Michał "stRing" Radecki-Mikulicz as a 1st place winner at Silly Venture
We've mentioned a number of text entry based adventure games over the years, from games such as Venganza and Spooky Adventure, to Knight Orc and Masquerade. But now another game has appeared which will appeal to gamers who have children, is michomis 1st place winner at Silly Venture 2021 called Troll's Treasure; A game which the creator made with his/her children developed using Atari Basic and compiled for the Atari XL/XE.
Final Assault - A rather impressive FPS by GMG for the Atari 8bit gets a new v1.1 build
Even though we were rather late with the news update for this game as I'm taking a short writing new year break, but if you have an Atari XL/XE and want to play something that's rather impressive for an 8bit game, then it might be worth your time checking out GMG's latest game update of 'Final Assault v.1.1'; A first person shooter developed by Robert Globe Pecnik and Marian Vybostok using a smooth Raycaster engine running at 25-30fps working on PAL and NTSC machines.
Bubble Shooter (Teaser) - A mobile game appears on the Atari XL with inspirations to Puzzle Bobble!
Puzzle Bobble has infuriated and thrilled us in equal measure since its release around the year of 1994. Its appeal captures all age groups, and the fun is doubled with a brother, sister or friend playing to beat each others high score. So why is this game getting another feature on IRN? Well if you have an Atari 8bit not only is a game being developed for the Atari XL/XE called 'Bubble Shooter' but it blends both Puzzle Bobble and the 2002 clone released on mobiles.
Frostbite - A classic Atari 2600 game from 1983 has appeared as a port for the Atari 8bit!
Great news for this rather grim Monday morning, as we've just been told by Saberman, that as of today you can download the Atari 2600 to Atari 8bit conversion of Frostbite developed by glurk; A game that was not only originally released by Steve Cartwright for the Atari 2600, and published by Activision way back in 1983, but also appeared as a great conversion by Antonio Savona and team for the C64 in 2019.
Old Towers - A great game by RetroSouls arrives on the Atari ST as a port by Andy Noble
If you've been following RetroSouls through the last couple of years, you would've known that they have released great games such as GLUF, Old Tower, Twinlight, Alter Ego, and even Tourmaline for the ZX Spectrum. Well if you remember one of those games as Old Towers, then you might like this news update, as thanks to Andy Noble who announced it on Twitter, he has said that he has released his Atari ST port of the game with full permission from RetroSouls.
Bone Cruncher - A 1987 puzzle video game by Superior Software gets an Atari XL/XE port
If you remember playing the 1987/8 game of 'Bone Cruncher'; a game released on the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Commodore 64 and Amiga by Superior Software, then you might like this news story. As thanks to Saberman contacting us recently via Facebook, he has told us that if you have an Atari XL/XE you can download Fandal, HardCore and Jose Pereira's version of that classic, which in itself is a port of the game from the BBC Micro.
