Castlevania VBXE - Thelen is working on an upcoming Castlevania game for the Atari XL/XE VBXE

We've certainly featured our fare share of Castlevania inspired games over the years, especially the most impressive Castlevania Spectral Interlude for the ZX Spectrum, the upcoming Akumajou Dracula AGA for the Amiga and even Maria Renard's Revenge, which is yet another upcoming Castlevania fan for the same system. Well here we are with another shout out for this classic, as Saberman has informed us that Thelen is working on a Castlevania game but for the Atari XL/XE with VBXE. To coincide with this news, Saberman has done a new gameplay video which gives us a first look at this early development!

Commando - A classic game gets an 8 level Atari XL/XE VBXE update

Saberman has yet again contacted us to let us know that Shanti77 has announced a 8 level update to his previously announced work in progress C64 to Atari XL/XE VBXE conversion of Commando. Not to be confused with the awesome Arnie flick of the same name (though equally as awesome), Commando is a 'one man takes on all' shooter (also like the awesome film) whereby it is your mission to kill anything that moves to progress to the next level.

Saberman has yet again contacted us to let us know that Shanti77 has announced a 4 level update to his previously announced work in progress C64 to Atari XL/XE VBXE conversion of Commando. As in the words of Shanti77 from our previous article "How does the game conversion from C64 to Atari using VBXE look like, the author has little knowledge of the C64 architecture, but is learning ;) When I found the described source code for this game on C64, I thought it would be a pity not to use it".

Dungeoneer - Dungeon Crawl in this new Atari XL/XE game via godlikemouse

Another retro gaming article to keep you company and yes we've certainly had a crazy week of it thus far, is a brand new game for the Atari XL/XE called 'Dungeoneer'. This latest addition to a long list of enjoyable games that we have seen for this system. Is a new game from godlikemouse in which you have traverse deadly dungeons, while avoiding nasty traps and enemies to find both treasure and keys. To coincide with this latest Atari XL/XE news, Saberman has done a new video for you to watch.

Labyrinth Dash - Classic Boulder Dash with new Atari XL/XE levels!

We've featured the 1984 Boulder Dash game many times now, from the release of Boulder Dash Junior II The Final Dig, to Boulder Dash Senior and even the more recent version on the VIC20. But now as something slightly different, we've just found out by through Saberman, that Homesoft has released the Boulder Dash Atari XL/XE clone of 'Labyrinth Dash'; a new version of the game which now features even more levels for you to enjoy.

Scorch - A Scorched Earth clone gets another preview for the Atari XL/XE

This game might not look like much, with its bare backgrounds and tiny coloured objects, but this is actually a NEW preview Atari XL/XE release, that comes across very much like Scorched Tanks on the Amiga and the MS-DOS game Scorched Earth. Developed by pirx and as a multiplayer game with up to 2 players so far and a huge list of changes listed below. Your ultimate goal is to wipe out your opponent by working out the correct trajectory that your Baby Missile flies through the air and hits dead on target!

Abu Simbel Profanation - A highly challenging 8bit platformer has been ported to the Atari XL/XE

Prepare to scream profanity at your keyboard because one of the "most difficult games of Spanish Software History" has just been converted to the Atari XL/XE by Felipe De Toro, it's "Abu Simbel Profanation". The third in the Johnny Jones Saga which was originally released in 1985 for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and MSX. The game was developed by Victor Ruiz and released by Dinamic Software in Spain (and Gremlin Graphics throughout the rest of Europe).

Gacek - A Bomb Jack port for the Atari XL/XE (+VBXE) is finally here and it's fab!

In the late 80's I played the brilliant Arcade port ' Bomb Jack '; a game that required you the player to jump and float about getting rid of all the bombs on the screen before they are used to blow up historic places of interest. It was such an awesome game that as of today you can download the final version of the excellent Bomb Jack port of 'Gacek' for both the Atari XL/XE and +VBXE by Shanti77. To coincide with this news Saberman has done a new video for you showing the gameplay of this new game.

Impetus & Ruptus - Two enjoyable shoot 'em ups released for the Atari XL/XE by Inufuto

The games just keep on coming, as thanks to another heads up earlier today from our good friend Saberman, he has told us that Inufuto has released two games for the Atari XL/XE called 'Impetus' and 'Ruptus'. While they are both Shoot 'em up related one is a top scrolling game destroying waves of enemies that approach you from in front, the other is a multi-directional shooter whereby you need destroy a large enemy boss/spaceship.

Bert - A nod to Q*Bert available for the Atari XL/XE

In 1982 Gottlieb released a very famous game that had an orange character with a long snout as a nose, it just had to be the isometric arcade game with puzzle elements of ' Q*Bert '. It was so popular in fact it appeared on many systems such as the Atari 2600 and the C64 with a cameo appearance in Wreck-It Ralph. But today's game has turned Q*Bert on its head, as Vitoco has released his classic inspiration of Bert written for NOMAM's Atari 8bit 10-liners BASIC Contest 2022!

Freeway - An Atari 2600 to Atari XL/XE port by Glurk gets a release

We've featured many Atari 2600 to C64 and Atari XL/XE conversions and ports throughout the years, from Spider Fighter, to Keystone Kapers and even our personal favorite Frostbite. Well here's some more good news to get us through this Tuesday which has been developed by Glurk, is the Atari 2600 to Atari XL/XE conversion/port of Freeway; a video game written by David Crane for the Atari 2600 and published by Activision in 1981, in which you need to get your chicken(s) across the road as many times as possible for a high score.

Gacek (VBXE) - Another Bomb Jack port for the Atari XL/XE gets a downloadable teaser!

I can still remember in the late 80's playing the brilliant Arcade port ' Bomb Jack '; a game that required you the player to jump and float about getting rid of all the bombs on the screen before they are used to blow up historic places of interest. It was such an awesome game that even though a fan port of the game was released on the Atari XL/XE coded by Krzysztof Gora in 2008, another version looks to be in the works and this one is called Gacek and developed by Shanti77. To coincide with this news, the game has not only got a new downloadable teaser, but a there's a new gameplay video by Saberman as well.

Troll's Treasure - A family friendly Adventure game by Michał "stRing" Radecki-Mikulicz as a 1st place winner at Silly Venture

We've mentioned a number of text entry based adventure games over the years, from games such as Venganza and Spooky Adventure, to Knight Orc and Masquerade. But now another game has appeared which will appeal to gamers who have children, is michomis 1st place winner at Silly Venture 2021 called Troll's Treasure; A game which the creator made with his/her children developed using Atari Basic and compiled for the Atari XL/XE.

Final Assault - A rather impressive FPS by GMG for the Atari 8bit gets a new v1.1 build

Even though we were rather late with the news update for this game as I'm taking a short writing new year break, but if you have an Atari XL/XE and want to play something that's rather impressive for an 8bit game, then it might be worth your time checking out GMG's latest game update of 'Final Assault v.1.1'; A first person shooter developed by Robert Globe Pecnik and Marian Vybostok using a smooth Raycaster engine running at 25-30fps working on PAL and NTSC machines.

Bubble Shooter (Teaser) - A mobile game appears on the Atari XL with inspirations to Puzzle Bobble!

Puzzle Bobble has infuriated and thrilled us in equal measure since its release around the year of 1994. Its appeal captures all age groups, and the fun is doubled with a brother, sister or friend playing to beat each others high score. So why is this game getting another feature on IRN? Well if you have an Atari 8bit not only is a game being developed for the Atari XL/XE called 'Bubble Shooter' but it blends both Puzzle Bobble and the 2002 clone released on mobiles.
