Zdendazuma - A homage and remake of the "Montezuma's Revenge" for the Atari XL/XE


Saberman has again contacted us with more great retro gaming news, as he has told us Zdeněk Zubr has teased a homage and remake of the "Montezuma's Revenge" by Robert Jaeger called Zdendazuma. While we are not sure what's changed as the ABBUC site is very confusing and frustrating ( lots of links, no public downloads ). We do however have a new video from Saberman, which shows a small walkthrough of this rather enjoyable looking game from Zdeněk Zubr.

Last Ninja 2 - After 9 years of development an all time classic arrives on the Atari XL/XE

What a week this has been, full of incredible news stories such as Turrican 2 AGA on the Amiga, to TERRESTRIAL on the C64. Well we haven't finished with the greatness just yet, as we have been told that one of System 3's greatest action adventure games from 1988 'The Last Ninja 2', has been fully ported over to the Atari XL/XE by Jakub Husak / Peter Scott after 9 years of development.. Yes indeed this classic game which appeared on the C64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS and NES, has been ported with all levels, game ending and a slight change of graphics.

Castlevania - Thelen is still working on an upcoming Castlevania game for the Atari XL/XE VBXE

We've featured our fare share of Castlevania inspired games over the years, with our personal favourite  being the excellent Castlevania Spectral Interlude on the ZX Spectrum. Well here we are with another shout out for this classic game series, as Saberman has informed us that Thelen has released an update to his work in progress Castlevania game for the Atari XL/XE called Castlevania VBXE. To coincide with this news, Saberman has done a new gameplay video which gives us another look at this early development!

OnEscape - A post-apocalyptic adventure game for the Atari XL/XE

Here on Indie Retro News we do love writing about the Atari XL/XE, especially with fabulous games being mentioned such as the Prince of Persia port and even Bruce Lee. Thankfully there's no let up in this greatness however, as thanks to another heads up from our good friend Saberman through Facebook, he has told us to let you all know that a new post-apocalyptic adventure game for the Atari XL/XE has been released called 'OnEscape'.

Bosconian - 1980's multi-directional scrolling shooter as an Atari 8bit 64KB port! (2022 Final Version)

It's the Atari's time to shine as another game has been given the port treatment and it's the Arcade game ' Bosconian ' developed by Namco all the way back in 1981. Currently available as a 64KB final 2022 version for the Atari 8bit by shanti77. Bosconian is a multi-directional scrolling shooter arcade game with similarities to Star Control, it requires you as the space ship pilot to score as many points as possible by destroying enemy missiles and bases while also avoiding asteroids, mines and other such ship destroying objects.

Bruce Lee - Return of Fury - A continuation of a classic 80's game has been released for the Atari XL/XE

In 1984 Datasoft released a brilliant arcade platformer called 'Bruce Lee' which was based on the famous motion picture martial artist. It was and still is a highly regarded platformer that is still loved to this day and can be played by anyone. But boy do we have some great news for you, as a Bruce Lee fan game by the name of Bruce Lee - Return of Fury, originally released for the PC, then by MegaStyle for the C64, has appeared on the Atari XL/XE thanks to Ute, Fantomas and Konstantinos Giamalidis.

Der Schraenker 2 - Even more safe cracking goodness for the Atari XL/XE

It was only just yesterday we featured a new game for the Atari XL/XE called 'Der Schraenker'; A game in which playing as a lone thief, you needed to break into a number of safes to find all the loot before moving on to the next ever more difficult level. Well straight onto today's update, as we've also been told that the second game of Der Schraenker 2, has also been entered into the ABBUC Software Contest 2022 with even more safe cracking goodness!

Another retro gaming article to keep you company and yes we've certainly had a busy week so far on Indie Retro News, is a brand new game tease for the Atari XL/XE called 'Der Schraenker' by Kveldulfur. In this game playing as a lone thief, you need to break into a number of safes to find all the loot before moving on to the next ever more difficult level. Dark Keep - A creepy rogue-like for the Atari XL/XE entered into the ABBUC Software Contest 2022

PacMen Evolution - Yet another Pac-Man game has been announced for the Atari XL/XE

We've featured Pac-Man so many times now on our website that I'm wondering if it's worth changing our name to Pac-Man Retro News :p. Well here we are with yet another Pac-Man game that's going to get a shout out, as we've recently found out through Saberman, that Lars Langhans's has entered his Pac-Man clone of PacMen Evolution into the ABBUC Software Contest 2022. To coincide with this news you can see another one of Saberman's game play video's below.

Retro Dschump! - A charming Atari XL/XE Bounder clone entered into the ABBUC Software Contest 2022

A lot of people who had an Amstrad CPC, Amstrad PCW, ZX Spectrum, MSX or Commodore 64 remember playing the game Bounder; a game released in 1985 by Gremlin Graphics in which the player navigates a variety of courses as a bouncing tennis ball. In fact one such person by the name of Peter Hinz seems to remember it, as we've just been told by Saberman, that Peter together with Miker has shown off a new Bounder inspiration for the Atari XL/XE called Retro Dschump!

Break It 2022 - An upcoming Arkanoid/Break Out style game for the Atari XL/XE by Oliver Cyranka

If you remember Arkanoid; an arcade game first developed by Taito in 1986, with the bat like device scrolling from side to side at the bottom of the screen, bouncing an orb back and forth and smashing blocks for a high score. Then you might like this news update! As thanks to Saberman contacting us through Facebook, he has told us that while the ABBUC competition 2022 is still on going, one of those games entered is a Arkanoid/Break Out style game of 'Break It 2022' by Oliver Cyranka.

Castlevania - Thelen is still working on an upcoming Castlevania game for the Atari XL/XE VBXE

We've featured our fare share of Castlevania inspired games over the years, from Castlevania Spectral Interlude on the ZX Spectrum, to the upcoming fan game of Maria Renard's Revenge for the Commodore Amiga. Well here we are with another shout out for this classic game, as Saberman has informed us that Thelen is still working on a Castlevania game for the Atari XL/XE called Castlevania VBXE. To coincide with this news, Saberman has done a new gameplay video which gives us another look at this early development!

OutRun - A technical demonstration of a classic racer for the Atari XL/XE

Way back in 1986 Sega released one of the greatest racers of our time, it just had to be Out Run. An Arcade racer designed by Yu Suzuki, that was not only a commercial success but became one of the best selling games of it's time. It had incredible graphics, fantastic music and fast paced track racing that really pushed you to the edge of your seat. Thankfully other people remember this fantastic game, as we've recently been contacted by Saberman, that Kjmann has shown a technical demonstration of what Outrun could look like running on the Atari XL/XE

Pac Time - Classic Pac-Man game arrives on the Atari XL/XE but with a difference!

We've featured Pac-Man so many times now on our website, from Jr. Pac-Man on the Intellivision, to Pac Man The Curse of the Slimers on the ZX Spectrum and even PAC-01 on the MSX. Well here we are with another Pac-Man game, as we've recently found out, that if you head on over to the link below you can download Łukasz "Luklab" Labuda's latest Pac-Man clone of Pac-Time; A new take on the classic with special power ups that gives you the edge!

Dragon Master - A Kung Fu Master like game in development for the Atari XL/XE

Those of you looking for some fresh weekly news for the Atari XL/XE have come to the right place, as Saberman has just informed us of a brand new game that is in development for the Atari 8bit called 'Dragon Master'. Now if you remember the 1980's game of Kung Fu Master which was released in the Arcades and later the Atari 2600, C64 and other 8bit's, then this game looks to be a nod to that classic, and is in development for the Atari XL/XE by Yaron Nir.

Scorch - A Scorched Earth clone gets a silly version for the Atari XL/XE

This game might not look like much, with its bare backgrounds and tiny coloured objects, but this is actually a new Atari XL/XE release that comes across very much like Scorched Tanks on the Amiga and the MS-DOS game Scorched Earth. Developed by Pirx with help by Pecusx and Miker, Scorch isn't just a multiplayer game with up to 4 players, but your ultimate goal is to wipe out your opponent by working out the correct trajectory that your Baby Missile flies through the air and hits dead on target!

Cacorm - An enjoyable 8bit game appears from Inufuto for the Atari XL/XE

If you have an Atari XL/XE or any of the other systems listed on the main website and looking for a fun game to play, then thanks to another heads up from Saberman, we've been told that Inufuto who is behind games such as ASCEND, has released a new game for the Atari XL/XE called 'Cacorm'; A game that isn't just a challenging to play, but in this rather enjoyable game you need to surround each of the stars in a Tron like way to complete the stage. To coincide with this news, Saberman has also done a view of the new game below.

Bubble Shooter - A Puzzle Bobble clone gets an Atari XL/XE release

Puzzle Bobble has infuriated and thrilled us in equal measure since its release around the year of 1994. Its appeal captures all age groups, and the fun is doubled with a brother, sister or friend playing to beat each others high score. In fact it even appeared as a clone of Puzzle Bobble which made its appearance on mobiles as a game called Bubble Shooter by Ilyon Dynamics. So why is this game getting a feature on IRN? Well if you have an Atari XL/XE you can now play the Atari 8bit version of Bubble Shooter; a game which blends both Puzzle Bobble and the 2002 clone released on mobiles.
