Don't touch the flames - Fun and frustration all wrapped into one

We haven't featured a free game from gamejolt for awhile, so it's time to take a look at "Don't touch the flames" from Retro Bungalow. In this highly tappable game you must collect as many crystals as possible to reach a high score, the problem is, the flames that appear on either side and more especially below will kill you. This game reminds me of flappy bird as you tap tap tap to keep in mid flight while avoiding certain death. Thankfully the collection of crystals unlocks extra characters and fuel will keep you going for longer. Although I found the game frustrating due to it's difficulty level, it's still a fun game to play and I kept coming back for more!

Grinder - A new take on Space Invaders

Your memories of Space Invaders would probably be of alien like spaceships slowly moving down the screen increasing in speed as you blast them out the way one by one. But Grinder, developed by member of jabber conference goes much further than that and changes not just the style but the level of difficulty contained within.

Red Death - A free exploration game that feels like Prometheus

Unlike some people I know, I really enjoyed the movie Prometheus, with it's alien world, large spaceship and strange deadly life forms. So when I happened to come across Red Death by Zeitgeist, it certainly gave me that Prometheus vibe. According to Zeitgeist, Red Death is an exploration game of survival as you partake on a mission to Mars to uncover it's secrets.

Northbound - Cool 2D Fighting game from Chadrick Evans

Developed by Chadrick Evans, Northbound is a cool in development 2D fighting game that's currently free to play. Featuring an Arcade Mode, a Versus Mode and a Practice Mode, you'll be fighting numerous opponents as you try to expose dangerous elementals. Although Northbound doesn't have a huge amount of characters, it is in development and will feature an online mode and additional characters later on.

The Heart Beyond Darkness - A platformer where light is your death!

Developed by Saulo Daniel in a game of darkness and light; The Heart Beyond Darkness is neat little platformer that has you playing as a minion on a journey sent by his master, to kill a girl that lives in the middle of the forest. What sounds like a dark and menacing game will change with emotion as your character questions his own moral decisions that will lead him to two different players. Take note of my advice though, avoid the light at all costs or you will suffer!

Legend Of Zelda: The Last Oracle - A fan made tribute game in progress

Somehow, almost all of the Zelda games passed me by. I never paid them much credence, possibly as I never owned a Nintendo console before the Wii (well I had a cube, but never got much into it beyond mario kart). However my wife got me playing twilight princess and now I'm hooked on the whole series! So just recently I'm making amends and going through some of the back catalogue via my phone and some great emulators (article to come ;) ). Thus this Legend of Zelda WIP demo has caught my interest...

Ye Legend Of Ye Pirate Princess - Solo adventure [Freeware Pick]

This is an action game with RPG elements: defeat enough enemies, and you'll level up, free to spend points in any stat you desire in order to customize your character to fully match your playing style. (Developer Quote)
Developed by Rosina L. Wildros

Run for your Life! - Free run and jump platformer

Developed by Daniel H for the #2colorsjam in which you are only allowed to use two colours. Run for your life is a free run and jump platformer that has both the fun and the frustration blended together. The aim of the game is to run through the level as fast as possible, while avoiding traps and falling meteorites. Just be warned though, as we noted before regarding the frustration, Run for your life is very difficult and will probably push your stress levels up.

The Legend of Traxtor - Space puzzler in a game boy theme

The #GBJAM3 is still progressing with lots of cool games developed in a game boy theme and today we have a pretty fun game to show you in the form of "The Legend of Traxtor". Developed by Reidrac the aim of this game is to use your ships tractor beam and match the shaped blocks to destroy them. The more blocks you remove, the higher the score and the higher the level of difficulty.

Space101 - A new take on the Asteroids game and it's FREE!

Now who here didn't like the 1979 Arcade version of Asteroids, where you fly your little ship about shooting Asteroids and UFOs while trying not to be destroyed? I certainly enjoyed it and so have many others, as have there have been countless clones of the game, but Space 101 by Norham is one of the better ones.

The Monkey King - Use the monkeys as weapons in this free Arcade game

Either your bored at work or nothing to play at home, then check out The Monkey King, Developed by cakeandturtles. A game that has you tasked with the collection of monkeys and using them as weapons against the evil Monkey King. This little gem of a game is a great time waster and did make me chuckle as I picked up those animals and chucked them at the king, however I wasn't expecting the big boss to grow and become progressively more difficult with every defeat.

The Gears Don't Grind - A free game of fun and frustration

Now I'm not sure if it's the colours or the game style behind the game, but The Gears Don't Grind certainly stood out in a crowd of free indie games. Developed by Ben Allen you play as a white thing, what can only be described as a turning screw that must avoid the skulls and obstacles to reach the chequered exit. Although it sounds pretty simple, it isn't! The Gears Don't Grind is not what the doctor ordered if you suffer from high stress levels.

Oliver Twist - Pickpocket the rich in this fun free browser based game

We've been naughty lately, we haven't posted many free indie games! Well that is about to change right now as we have Oliver Twist to show you. A fun free browser based game in which you play as a famous character from the fun re-telling of Oliver Twist in a game of thievery and escapism.  Developed by Shortee you'll need to pickpocket the rich for the criminal gang leader Fagin, but watch out because if the cops catch you you'll be given a good telling off.

GB Jam 3 - It's time for you to create your own GameBoy themed game!

I do love a good game jam and when I checked my emails today I was told about one of the best jams ever is about to begin, the GB Jam 3. As is the case with every previous edition, developers from around the world will need to create a game in the theme of the current jam. In this case you'll need to make a game based on a GameBoy theme. One of my favourite little handhelds with such classics as Mario and Zelda, you just know some great titles are going to come out of this wicked jam.

20 Waves - A new take on the Tower Defence genre and it's FREE

Although I'm not a fan of Tower Defence games (it's not my style), 20 Waves by Colin Lane does change the genre slightly and offers a lot of fun in a freely playable browser based game. But what makes this game so different from the others? Well factor in that it's not top down and it's 2D based, but turrets, force fields, and walls need to be placed against the oncoming waves from the sides to defend your mining operation. It's that simple!

Danger Zone - Free Shoot em up with a Top Gun theme

Revvin' up your engine, Listen to her howlin' roar, Metal under tension, Beggin' you to touch and go, Highway to the danger zone, Ride into the danger zone... Ok I'll stop now, but seriously that's the tribute behind this Shoot em up, it's Top-Gun, a developer tribute to the film. In this game you'll be fighting waves of alien enemies as the world is under attack from an alien assault, but the only ones brave enough or stupid enough to take on this threat is America's best pilots, the top guns! Danger Zone, which is another reference is a vertical top down scrolling shooter from archvizer that sways more towards the avoiding of enemies and bullets than actually fighting in a shoot em up genre.

The Matrix World Crycron Escape - Reach a high score in this insanely difficult game

Are you sitting down feeling all calm and relaxed, well it's time to change all that, as you've got TMW Crycron Escape to play. Crycron Escape is a one touch Arcade game from JOZGames that will frustrate you, drive you insane but will also keep you coming back for more. In this game you control a psychedelic green ball with gravitational powers, that must not clash with the oncoming walls and reach as far as possible for a high score. Although it sounds like fun, it's incredibly difficult! But don't let that put you off as it's still very much enjoyable and has a great sound track.

Duke Nukem 2.5 - It's duke but in blocky pixels!

Have you ever wondered what Duke Nukem (the first person shooter classic) would be like in tiny pixelated form then look no further, as Ezepov has released Duke Nukem 2.5 for your enjoyment. Featuring a 3 level demo you'll be blasting your enemies, admiring the little bit textures and kicking much ass! So give it a go, it's free and only 12MB

SHAPIK: THE QUEST - Solve lots of puzzles in this creative free adventure game

Every so often we get a weird but wonderful game from a developer that is both artistically creative and comes with a well thought out story. And Shapik: The Quest by Paul is one of those games. Following in a very similar style to Machinarium in which parts of the game screen need to be clicked to solve certain puzzles in a set order, is an epic story of Shapik as he travels through a magic forest in search of his missing sister. As the developer states : Explore a beautiful world, full of mystery, magic and danger and find your missing sister, solving puzzles on your way. This is a game that comes highly recommended and considering it's free I'm even more impressed!

Zombie City - Control the horde in this free Zombie game

Are you bored with the constant survival games and want to actually be a Zombie, well now you can in "Zombie City", which is a free game developed by JonOrtiz_.  You play as a Zombie and must take over the city by any flesh eating way possible, and this is done by controlling the horde and taking out the police. By touching people or the policemen they themselves turn into Zombies. It's a fun action top down game but it is in very early stages and doesn't seem to go any further than going east after taking out the policemen. However don't let that put you off as I for one hope it develops into a full game, so check it out.
