Layla : The Iris Missions - A complete enhancement HACK for this NES Action Platformer

Prepare for blasting action as Supper via the Romhacking website has released the full enhancement hack for the Japanese only NES game ' Layla The Iris Missions '. In this action packed platformer, you play as Lyla on an Iris mission to defeat Chinelkov Manitokha and his army of mutant Chimairan. Throughout the game you'll be blasting enemies, fighting big bosses, collecting items and trying not to be crushed by the 30ton weights to save the galaxy!

DuckTales 2 - Play as Darkwing Duck in this great two player hack!

With so many console games from our past being hacked with improvements such as graphical enhancements or even English translations, I'm really starting to wonder if I should get another everdrive SD cart so I can play all these hacks on original hardware. In actual fact it's today's seriously cool two player hack of the 1993 Capcom NES game ' DuckTales 2' by Ti, that almost pushed me over the edge to actually get one!

3x3 Eyes : Juuma Houkan - Side-scrolling action adventure gets a full English translation

The gaming news just keeps on coming, as just moments ago @VizionGamer gave us the heads up of the English translation for the side scrolling action adventure game on the SNES ' 3x3 Eyes : Juuma Houkan '. Released only in Japan in the mid 90's and developed by Banpresto, this game is based on the 3×3 Eyes manga and OVA and puts you in control of Yakumo. You must travel around various parts of Hong Kong and other areas to prevent the resurrection of an evil beast!

Bomberman Cx - Play as Black Bomberman and more in this great NES hack!

When I was growing up there was a game I used to love playing with friends, whereby your task was to drop bombs and either blow up other enemies or your very best friend(s) in a maze like game screen. That game was Bomberman also known as Dynablaster, which was actually first released way back in 1983 by Hudson Soft and then published by Konami. It was and still is a fantastic game that can still be played to this day on many different systems and as different versions/sequels. In fact the reason we are mentioning the game today is for the release of ' Bomberman Cx ', which is a rather decent hack of Bomberman on the NES!

Friday the 13th - NES classic horror back with improvements

In 2014 one of our reviewers Duston Justice, did a terrific review of the 1989 NES horror game ' Friday the 13th ', which was developed by the Japanese game developer Atlus. He noted the idea of having any significant blood, gore, or violence in a 1980's video game was unheard of, and given both the limitations of the console and of what would have been acceptable at the time, ‘Friday the 13th’ on NES was a flawed but interesting and fun game, although some critics have said this was one of the worst NES games of all time. But now thanks to Harlemhero, this marmite game has been given a number of improvements to make it just that little bit more enjoyable.

Wizardry V : The Heart of the Maelstrom - SNES Dungeon Crawler released in English and Uncensored!

@VizionGamer contacted us recently about a new English translation and fully uncensored version of Wizardry V : The Heart of the Maelstrom that had been announced via the Romhacking website. This game which is a dungeon crawler and available to play on an SNES, was already released in North America but however decent it was, it didn't the better qualities of the version that was released in Japan. All references to nudity, alcohol, blood, violence, and religion were replaced in the North American version and this hack not only keeps the English intact but removes the censorship so players can experience the game as it was intended.

Metroid - Rogue Dawn - Unofficial NES prequel to the original Metroid game released!

Another great release today and this is for all you NES gamers across the globe, as Grimlock, Optomon, snarfblam and team have released ' Metroid : Rogue Dawn ' version 1.10; the unofficial prequel to the first Metroid game released way back in 1986. This rather eye opening prequel shows the events that unfolded before Samus's famous Zero Mission on planet Zebes, it puts you in control of Dawn Aran on a mission to retrieve a newly discovered biological specimen in the possession of a Federation research crew orbiting planet SR388.

Alex Kidd 2 - Curse In Miracle World - SMS Demo Hack looks seriously cool!

In 1987 Sega released the great side-scrolling platform game ' Alex Kidd ' for the Sega Master System console. Although it was first released in Japan in 1986 but internationally in 1987, it was one of the most well known games as it was also built into most Master System II's. For anyone that has played that great game, will be pleased to know Yeti Bomar (aka Watain) has released the Alex Kidd 2 - Curse in the Miracle World demo, which is an eye popping Sega Master System hack of the original game made with KiddEd.

Famicom Grand Prix II : 3D Hot Rally - An entertaining Famicom racer fully translated

Super Mario Kart wasn't the only classic Nintendo racing game that Mario and Luigi star'd in, but way before that in 1988 in Japan they also appeared in the enjoyable racing game ' Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally ', which only recently has been fully translated into English on the Famicom system by AgentOrange and team. Playing in a similar style to that of Rad Racer with a flavour of other racing games of that era, you must drive as fast as possible around each of the 3 tracks against the time limit to win the race!

Glory of Heracles IV - Milestone English fan translation for an EPIC SNES RPG

I was wondering when the next Romhacking special would appear especially towards Christmas, and sure enough here comes another English translation, and this time it's for the Japanese game ' Glory of Heracles IV ', or the proper name Heracles no Eikou IV: Kamigami Kara no Okurimono. Now translated by the Nightcrawlers Translation Corporation (Nanashi), this is an EPIC JRPG with a deep story and gameplay that blends Greek mythology, the story of Pandora’s Box, and the quest for eternal life with similarities to the Dragon Quest games.

Out Live - A Dungeon Crawling Turbografx-16 English translation

Yet again here we are mentioning another Dungeon Crawler style game, but this time we wont be featuring a band of adventurers looking for loot in some far off cavern, but a Sci-Fi crawler fully English translated on the Turbografx-16 by Nebulous Translations. Now you've probably never heard of this one, but this is 'Out Live' by Sunsoft; a first person mech/robot controlling experience through 3D tunnels that was released way back in 1989 in Japan. According to Romhacking, You start your journey on planet Lafura (you’re investigating your friend’s disappearance) with 1000 credits, 1000 life units and a vulcan gun and must blast your way through dangerous zones!

Super Mario Bros 3 - A New Journey - 8 newly themed worlds to explore in a NES classic

Either you've been living in a cave or stuck on some far off island waiting for rescue, there's probably not one person on this Earth who hasn't heard the name Mario, or more especially the legendary classic Super Mario Bros 3 by Nintendo on the NES, released way back in 1988-1991. One of the finest platformers ever that has lasted the test of time, is once again gracing our gaming screens as an unofficial extended release in ' Super Mario Bros 3: A new Journey' by Alan Jacobs.

SEGA classic Sonic the Hedgehog on the NES as a hack gets an improvement patch

Good afternoon you lovely people have I got some great news to brighten up your day! Remember last month when I announced with a big article, SEGAs classic Sonic the Hedgehog but released on the NES as a hack by JABU. Well you'll be pleased to know after some negative feedback regarding the music, not only has there been a music improvement patch done by Ti, but there has also been a graphical enhancement done by exactly the same person.

SEGA classic Sonic the Hedgehog on the NES? Oh yes!

Through all these years of playing on old consoles and computers with some of the very best and worst games developers had to offer, there's always something out there that I've never heard of before. Thus here we are with the classic and well loved Sonic the Hedgehog, but this time it isn't on any SEGA device, but on the NES as an improved and more playable HACK version in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Grump's Dream Course - Kirby’s Dream Course SNES hack with 152 hours of fun!

Between 1994 and 1995 the SNES video game ' Kirby's Dream Course ' was released across the globe developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo as a golf video game with a difference. It star'd none other than Kirby and was viewed in an isometric viewpoint and required you the player to hit Kirby around each course and into a hole just like in golf. The difference being, Kirby must hit all the enemies in the game, giving you different abilities and the hole will be revealed. It was such a fun and competitive game that it also ended up on the Grumps Let's Play channel, of which the reason Grump's Dream Course  a SNES hack, has appeared today!

Star Cruiser - Japanese Sega Mega Drive RPG gets a full English translation

What a great start to the week and it's just about to get so much better, as celcion, cccmar and KenshinX have released the full English translation public beta of the seriously cool action adventure RPG 'Star Cruiser' for the Sega Mega Drive. Originally this was a Japanese game developed by Arsys Software and released in Japan for the PC-88, Sharp X1, NEC PC-98 and Sharp X68000 and ported by Masaya (NCS) to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis home console in 1990.

Super Pitfall 30th Anniversary Edition : NES Super Pitfall turns 30 today and a fan has fixed it‏!

In 1986 Pony Inc released the loose remake of Pitfall II: Lost Caverns ' Super Pitfall ' for the Famicom and PC-8801. It was a scrolling platformer that also appeared in 1987 for the NES as another line up in the Pitfall series which first appeared on the Atari 2600 and published by Activision. However Super Pitfall unlike the original Atari 2600 game was not so well received with one such site saying  "Pitfall is one of the best Atari 2600 games but Super Pitfall is one of the worst NES games" (Wiki). So not really much to celebrate on that front, but along comes a professional game artist by the name of Mário Azevedo (nesrocks) who has released The Super Pitfall 30th Anniversary Edition; a fan fixed game for the NES.

Facebook Indie Retro News Account Hacked

You may have noticed the lack of updates to Facebook these last few days, that is because over the weekend our Facebook account was hacked. Thankfully there doesn't look to be any damage as such to the profile even with two step authorisation, but currently Facebook is playing hard ball and making it even more difficult to get this resolved as quick as possible. So expect a few more days down time via Facebook but no changes elsewhere. Thank you - Admin

Monster Tactics - Complete overhaul of Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSX

It isn't very often we feature games for the original Playstation, so how about the recent announcement for the complete overhaul of Final Fantasy Tactics as ' Monster Tactics '. Originally released in Japan in 97 and then in USA in 98, Final Fantasy Tactics was a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) and combines elements of the original Final Fantasy games with a isometric, 3D, rotating battle system. This latest hack overhaul has almost changed the completely with not just the battles themselves, but also to the mechanics!
