Top 11 Games for the Amstrad CPC in 2017

2017 was yet again another fine year for homebrew and indie releases for the humble CPC, again boosted by CPCretroDev's yearly competition, but many more games made their way onto the Amstrad from some very talented programmers. Shining, Keith Sear, Naverro, McKlain, 4mhz and more were very busy indeed. The quality of the games has rose to amazing standards, so choosing a Top 11 was tricky to say the least.

AEON OF SANDS - A dungeon love letter to classic PC and Amiga games of the 90s.

Grimoire isn't the only game we should be talking about today, as we've also heard from the developers Two Bits Kid, based in Germany, that the dungeon crawler ' AEON OF SANDS ' is basically finished, although 90% of the mazes are in alpha state with all dialogues and graphics. Now for those of you that haven't heard of this game before, this dungeon crawler harks back to the days of Eye of Beholder or Lands of Lore and is a "Dungeon Adventure" story-driven RPG love letter to the golden Amiga, PC classics of the 90's.

Eternal Emblem - This retro style RPG needs your greenlight votes!

Some more Greenlight news for Thursday as the fantasy retro styled RPG 'Eternal Emblem' developed by BTD in partnership with I-Elemental and publishing by Back To Basics Gaming, is currently aiming for a Steam Greenlight success. Inspired by SNES games such as Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu, Illusion of Gaia and Bahamut Lagoon. The game will hopefully pull you in as a fully story driven RPG, a touch of humour, and finally being able to Travel across a vast world in an epic tale of friendship and war.

MachiaVillian - Monster mansion management game looks for Kickstarter funding

French studio Wild Factor have just announced their Steam Greenlight and Kickstarter campaign for their upcoming monster management game MachiaVillain. Although this is the studio's first project, the team are hardened industry gamedevs and MachiaVillian is the extension of a high ranking Ludum Dare entry.

Order of the Throne - The Kings Challenge - Sierra style adventure is now available!

What a great day for Sierra fans, as Infamous Quests, the same team behind the hit adventure Quest for Infamy, have announced the release of ' The Order of the Thorne: The King's Challenge ' on GOG. A brand new game with a spankingly good story and lovely retro styled graphics of old, this is the first in a planned anthology's as you assume the role of Finn the Bard, a challenger in a competition held by the King to seek out his missing Queen. Along with your magical lute, Finn must use his cunning wit and musical ability to venture forth in this fantasy quest.

Dungeon Kingdom - HydroGames aims to impress with this Dungeon Crawler!

Dungeon Crawlers it's a time to pick up your axes, collect your shields and swords and ready those spells, as the developers Hydro-Games have finally announced the early access arrival of their very impressive looking dungeon crawler of ' Dungeon Kingdom : Sign of the Moon ', which is now on Steam! Of all the games I've been waiting for in that Dungeon Master/EOB style, this one could well be on par with the modern Legend of Grimrock as it has more than just a rich story to keep you going!

Dungeon Kingdom - Retro inspired Dungeon Crawler via Steam Early Access soon!

After a successful Steam Greenlight campaign, and multiple features on our site, the developers behind the most impressive looking Dungeon Crawler 'Dungeon Kingdom' have today announced a Steam Early Access date at the end of this month (25th September to be precise). Although the game was not an Indiegogo success, the developers have continued to develop this old school dungeon styled crawler and hope the in game features such as multiple dungeons (outdoors), continuous non loading levels, cross platform saving, advanced graphics, real physics using PhysX, an advanced AI, and an advanced navigation system will be a hit with gamers both young and old.

We've just received some lovely news from Yanim Studio today as they've informed us of the release of 'Red Goddess' ; a beautiful looking action adventure which is now available to buy on Steam. Featuring stunning 3D graphics, spectacular effects and countless elaborate details developed using an extended Unreal Engine 4. You play as the emotions of the Divine, to explore her mind, deep inside the subconscious, to try and remember and recover her own powers.

Satellite Reign - Spiritual successor to Syndicate released on GOG and Steam!

Grand news today as 5 Lives Studios have informed us of the release of 'Satellite Reign', which is now available to buy on GOG, Humble and Steam. Over 2 years since their successful Kickstarter campaign. and many days through the early access program. 'Satellite Reign' is a spiritual successor to the Syndicate Series and the same creator behind Syndicate Wars, which was originally released by Bullfrog Productions in the 1990's and in my opinion was some of the greatest games I have ever played.

What a great way to start Tuesday, as the developers 5LivesStudios have announced the release date for the Kickstarter success of 'Satellite Reign' ; a spiritual successor to the Syndicate Series which is coming August 28th! Syndicate and Syndicate Wars released by Bullfrog Productions in the 1990's were some of the greatest Action Strategy games I have ever played. Yet fast forward to this week and the same creator behind Syndicate Wars has not only mentioned the release date but also a brand new launch trailer to whet your appetite.

Stasis - Sci-fi bloody horror adventure launch trailer and release date!

After many months of waiting in anticipation, Daedalic Entertainment and The Brotherhood have now launched the very latest trailer for their upcoming PC 2D isometric point and click bloody horror adventure of 'Stasis; which is due for release 31st August. Stasis follows the game-play mechanics of classics like Space Quest, Kings Quest, The Dig, Day of the Tentacle and the critically acclaimed Sanitarium, and twists it into a dark horror filled adventure set on a desolate spacecraft. This latest trailer shows off it's very creepy atmosphere with oodles of blood, and also the mention of a GOG and Steam release.

When it comes to Indie games some of the most popular types are those that involve the player exploring deep caves and fighting beasts with a mission to collect something of value. It gives you that urge to go ever deeper and a wonder of what lurks around the next rock face. As such, here we are with 'Random Acts of Mining'; a game that involves a Robotic Underground Treasure Hunter as she navigates her way through dangerous randomly-populated subterranean environments to procure precious gems and acquire valuable wildlife specimens that was lost in an accidental teleport!

Lethis : Path of Progress - Anno style in a Victorian Steampunk vibe now on Steam!

After 9 months of intensive development, Triskell Interactive have finally announced their Steam Greenlight success of 'Lethis Path of Progress' is now available to buy on Steam. Set in a Victorian Steampunk universe in a time when Steam is discovered as a source of energy. You must build your city, help your citizens and honour the requests of the Emperor himself. Lethis has been one of our most eagerly awaited city builders, as you not only have to manage your city, but provide resources, workers, trade with other cities and everything that makes the city builder such a great genre.

Eitr - An action RPG you'll not want to miss!

Developed by Eneme Entertainment in partnership with Devolver Digital, 'Eitr' is the latest Action RPG that is at the highest point on my wishlist. It is an Indie game that doesn't just have great pixel art, but it looks to take on Diablo with inspirations from Dark Souls and Golden Axe and give the genre a kick up the rear. The game according to the developers, will be challenging, require timing and precision as players need to use a combination of blocking, combos, buffs and positioning to succeed in battle. In light of this news the creators have released a gameplay trailer!

Death's Gambit - A beautifully pixelated action RPG PS4 Reveal Trailer

Some time back now we gave you the first heads up over a gorgeous looking game called Death's Gambit, which is being developed by White Rabbit. Death's Gambit is a pixelated Action RPG sidescroller with rather impressive animation and visuals set in an alien medieval planet filled with horrors, beasts, and knights. Today the developers have just launched a PS4 Reveal Trailer that shows cutscenes and gameplay sequences in various locations that the player will visit and experience. In addition, there is an epic scene of the player riding a horse in a frozen wasteland as the camera zooms out to reveal a giant walking beside him.

The Explorer of Night - Nice little playable platformer that's still a work in progress

I usually skip right on by when it comes to games on Gamejolt, mainly for the fact that many of them are just clones of more popular games such as Flappy Bird, or containing lots of references to Pewdiepie which I find more than a little annoying. However I did come across a game called 'The Explorer of the Night' developed by Alexander Bondarenko which really pulled me in with it's unusual colour design and for the fact it's a platformer which I spend much of my spare time playing.

MegaSphere - Action sci-fi and impressive pixels available for pre-order

Someone recently said to me, "hey Indie Retro find me a game that looks really cool, has lots of action and is in a sci-fi theme". Well thankfully we have found what you are looking for! Say hello to the best looking sci-fi action shooter we've seen this year so far. It's 'MegaSphere' developed by Anton Kudin, that has mad battling robots, lots of loot and upgradable weapons in an unpredictable world that is different every time you play!

Void Raiders - Action packed shooter is free to play!

BiT Evolution - Retro styled Platformer out now on Steam

Described as a love letter to classic games from our youth, the developers Major Games, Inc have announced their retro styled platformer title 'BiT Evolution' is out of early access and available to buy on Steam. In 'Bit Evolution' players will become “BiT”, a puck from a table-tennis game influenced by Pong. Looking to break free from his paddle overlords, BiT discovers new worlds inspired by the iconic platforms of Atari, Gameboy, NES, and SNES.

Wyv and Keep - Lovely PC puzzle-platformer coming to Mac and Linux June 11th!

Some time back we featured Wyv and Keep, developed by A Jolly Corpse. Which is a game of action, traps and puzzle solving using two players, as you traverse the levels in search of the legendary lost idol.
