Wing Commander II - Cola Powered Gamer reviews a brilliant sequel!

Following the success of Wing Commander, Origin System decided to create a sequel. Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi, or simply Wing Commander II is everything a good sequel should be. Released in 1991, about the year after the release of the first game, Wing Commander II had several improvements over its predecessor.

Beneath a Steel Sky - A great sci-fi Adventure from 1994 reviewed by Cola Powered Gamer

Beneath a Steel Sky is a second game made by Revolution Software, after the decent success of their first game Lure of the Temptress. For this game Revolution Software really put the effort and love in this game. Writers Cecil Charles and Dave Cummins goal was to find a mix between the seriousness of Sierra games and the comedy of LucasArts’ games.

Theme Park - One of the best theme park strategy games gets a DarkwyndPT review!

Now, we’re just upping the ante, aren’t we? Still, it’s impossible to make a Bullfrog retrospective without mentioning another critical and commercial successful title, which is perhaps their most colourful game that also begun its own influential series. I’m talking about Theme Park.

Theme Park is a managerial strategy game developed by Bullfrog and published by Electronic Arts. It was originally released in 1994 for the 3DO, Commodore Amiga, DOS and Macintosh. The following year, it was ported to the Amiga CD32, FM Towns, Genesis/Megadrive, Jaguar, PC-98, Playstation, Sega Mega-CD, Sega Saturn and SNES/Super Nintendo. In 2007, it was remade for the Nintendo DS and in 2008, that remake was ported for the Playstation 3 and PSP and in 2012, it was ported for the PS Vita. In 2013, the original version was re-released for Windows and Macintosh. There’s also an iOS remake with microtransactions which was released in 2011, but it wasn’t as well received (I wonder why).

Populous - A brilliant Strategy game reviewed by DarkwyndPT

Well, it isn’t too hard to figure out which Bullfrog game I’ll start reviewing for this retrospective. And it’s only fair that I start with Bullfrog’s first and possibly biggest success ever: Populous.

Populous is a managerial/strategy game developed by Bullfrog and published by Electronic Arts. It was originally released in 1989 for the Amiga, Atari ST and DOS. The following year, it was ported to the Genesis/Megadrive, PC-98, Sharp X68000 and the SNES/Super Nintendo. In 1991, it was ported to the Master System and Turbografx-16. In 1992, it was ported to the Acorn 32-bit and the following year for the Macintosh. In 2011, it was re-released for Windows.

Plutonium Caverns - A new Puzzle game developed for MS-DOS

It's not often we feature MS-DOS games, unless of course it's a glorious classic released on GOG, but today's announcement is something special. As we've been told by a member on our MS-DOS Gaming Facebook group, that Jani Nykänen has released a new game for MS-DOS called ' Plutonium Caverns '. This game which is also playable online, is a 2D top down puzzle game in which you need to collect all the diamonds to move on to the next level.

Loom review - An all time classic Adventure game reviewed by DarkwyndPT

Wow, almost a month without posting anything! Again, I apologise for the lack of posts and reviews. My professional life has a way of slowly taking over my personal life, which includes all my hobbies (but someone has to pay the bills!) But now I’m back and to make up for my absence, let’s review one of my favourite graphic adventures of all times, Loom.

27 June 2018, renowned sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison passed away at the age of 84. Ellison is considered one of the most prolific and influential sci-fi writers of the 20th century and today we’re going to take a look at the video game adaptation of one of his most famous short-stories: I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit DOS review by DarkwyndPT

Well, it’s Easter again and to celebrate this holiday, we’re going to take a look at an adaptation of perhaps the best live-action and cartoon crossover movie ever made (that also features a rabbit BTW). We’re talking about Who Framed Roger Rabbit! - Who Framed Roger Rabbit is an action game developed by Silent Software and published by Buena Vista. It was originally released in 1988 for the Commodore Amiga, Apple II, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and DOS.

WWF WrestleMania - The latest DOS review by DarkwyndPT

Any wrestling fan out there (even filthy casuals like me) knows that the upcoming weekend is WrestleMania, definitely the most famous wrestling event in the world. And to celebrate such occasion, let’s look at one of the first wrestling games ever made for the PC, WWF WrestleMania (not to be confused with all the other games with the same title though).

SimCity - DarkwyndPT takes a look at multiple versions of Sim City in this BIG review!

And again we’re going to take a look at not just a true classic game, but also a highly influential title that helped define an entire genre, spawned several clones and influenced several other titles. I’m talking about the one and only SimCity.

DAAD Adventure Writer - Text based adventure game creator, fully recovered after 30 years!

A great piece of news has just hit our inbox, as we've recently been contacted by Stefan Vogt, the same creator behind the recently updated brilliant science fiction game Hibernated 1: This Place is Death. That he has recently announced the DAAD Adventure Writer has been fully recovered, extended and released after being lost for 30 years. This incredible piece of software allows you to create text based adventure games, for systems such as the C64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX, PCW, Atari ST, Amiga, IBM PC (DOS)!

Hibernated 1 - This Place is Death - Text based adventure for multiple retro systems inc Amiga/Atari ST

Text Adventures were many of our first forays into video gaming. Similar to the Adventure stories we would get as books each adventure was usually a unique, and fulfilling story combined with puzzles, traps, loot, and enemies. The latest release by Stefan Vogt is one such classic text based adventure game and although it is a sci-fi adventure known as Hibernated 1: This Place is Death, it will still feel right at home for anyone who likes entering text based commands such as EXAMINE BODY, CHECK CORPSE, INSPECT DEAD!

51 DOS game intros - Over 2 hours of nostalgia goodness!

Call me an old timer but I love talking about the days of DOS, a time when the only thing in front of you other than a computer was a blinking command prompt waiting for you to run a game such as C:\, C:\Dune and Dune.exe. So to hear from einokeino303 that he has done a spectacular Youtube video in relation to 51 great DOS game intros, my mind was blown and wanting more!

Simon the Sorcerer 25th Anniversary Edition - Double compilation of classic Adventuring is now available

Good morning retro world I'm not sure if you've noticed but as of this moment, Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition is now available on Steam! These are two incredible games full of charm, great characters, fabulous retro detail, lovely music and voiceovers by Chris Barrie that in my opinion is every bit as good as other great adventure games such as Kryandia or even Secret of the Monkey Island!

Simon the Sorcerer 25th Anniversary Edition - Double compilation of classic Adventuring coming 3rd April!

Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of Adventure games such as Broken Sword, The Secret of Monkey Island, Kyrandia and even the Discworld series, but there's two games that really top the list for me and that's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2. Two brilliant adventure games released in the 90's by Adventure Soft, that follow a story about a boy called Simon. The game was full of charm, great characters, fabulous retro detail, lovely music and voiceovers by Chris Barrie. If you remember these glorious Adventure games you'll be pleased to know Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition is coming to PC 3rd April!

Mages of Aethelion - NES strategy game is in development

It's not often we mention new strategy games coming to the NES, but Estlib and with the help of MS-DOS, have announced they are working on a NES strategy game called Mages of Aethelion, which they hope to be a feature complete turn-based exploration experience. Now before you get your hopes up, there is a long way to go as the game is still in development and the screenshots below will be subject to change, especially the terrain.

DOS creation contest - DOS based games on IRN! Awesome :)

Call me an old timer but I love talking about the days of DOS, a time when the only thing in front of you other than a computer was a blinking command prompt waiting for you to run a game such as C:\, C:\Dune and Dune.exe. So to hear from high-voltage.cz that they were running a DOS creation contest in which you had to make an executable under MS-DOS 6.22 at a 486DX , made my eyes sparkle like a kid in a candy store.

Pila - Top down humorous action puzzle game lost and found - PC/MAC Release Soon!

In the late 90's childhood friends Kasper Kabell and Jon Auring Grimm were about to release a charming action puzzle game with humorous overtones as 'Pila' for MS-DOS, but sadly after concerns and fears, the game never got published, at least until now. Thanks to renowned retro gaming guru Bobby, who owns the combined retro gaming and toy store, barber shop and arcade in Copenhagen, Ruben og Bobby. Pila was re-discovered in 2016 and towards the 28th of April will be coming to both Windows and Mac!

Dragon's Breath - The best Dragon game ever? Amiga playable on PC and MAC!

When I was but a we'lad I played in my opinion one of the best ever games ever to grace a computer; a game whereby you could not only control Dragons, but you could breed them AND use Alchemy to either improve or if failure, make them sick before the battle ahead. It just had to be the ultimate Dragon game, Dragon's Breath AKA Dragon Lord by Palace Software, LTD and Spotlight Software in 1990. Which has also been unofficially made available via GamesNostalgia as a freely launchable exe file for PC and Mac.

MS-DOS Games in 1991 - A retro trip back in time by DOS Nostalgia

When I was growing up I used to love playing games such as Dizzy on my Amstrad and then much later the Amiga spending entire summer holidays on games such as Dragons Breath, Deuteros and Monkey Island on my Amiga 500. What a golden era of gaming, that for its time couldn't be beat, at least not until MS-DOS came about anyway especially with all those incredible titles that were to follow. I mean seriously, getting a 386 or a 486 from your dad with a turbo button and playing Strike Commander or Lands of Lore with fully digitised speech was a joy to behold! Thus in celebration of some of those MS-DOS games, DOS nostalgia has done an hour length video featuring MS-DOS games from 1991.
