If you have a ZX Spectrum at hand or an emulator installed, chances are you if you were reading IndieRetroNews at the time, you would've come across Amawek's excellent horror game called 'Virgil's Purgatory'; a game which celebrated the Modern Art Week in Brazil. Well fast forward to this month, and thanks to Amaweks giving us the heads up just recently, we have been told that same game has also been released for the MSX. As in the words of the creator "Virgil's Purgatory for ZX and MSX is a metroidvania platformer. The game is based on the 2016 PC version, but has a lot of differences in graphics and level design".
Black Sea - A fabulous Amstrad and ZX Spectrum game finally arrives on the MSX!
Black Sea is getting another feature on Indie Retro News, as Saberman was kind enough to let us know through Facebook, that if you're looking for a fun for all the family Arcade game either for your Amstrad, ZX Spectrum or the latest released MSX, then you might like check out Mananuk's new game of ' Black Sea '; A new release in which you play as Submarine Captain Robinson on a quest deep into the Black Sea to search for treasures and discover all the secrets that those waters hold.
Randoom - A challenging yet enjoyable C64 game gets an MSX2 remake!
The retro gaming news just keeps on coming, as if the announcement of Blackest Crypt, RodMän Jr+ and Knights & Slimes wasn't enough to whet your appetite, then you might be interested to learn as of today, you can now download the latest MSX2 release of Randoom by RoboSoft Inc; an MSX2 remake of the original game created for the C64 in which we said was a very challenging yet highly enjoyable game by Picaro Games!
ASCEND - Climb to the top, avoid the baddies in this new multi system game! (Amstrad...ZX Spectrum etc)
If you have an Amstrad CPC or any of the other systems mentioned below and looking for a fun game to play through this week, then thanks to another heads up from our good friend Saberman, we've been told that Inufuto has released a new game for the Amstrad, MSX, PC-**, MZ-*, SMC, ZX Spectrum and X1 game of ASCEND; A challenging platformer in which you need to reach the top within the time limit without being killed by Ghoulies and Ghosties!
Defence - A Galaga / Space Invaders mash up appears as the 4th entry into the MSXdev22 competition.
We've featured Galaga on Indie Retro News a number of times already, there was the Atari 2600 port, the excellent demake on the Amiga by Pink and Fade One and then the more recent C64 release by Arlasoft. Well fast forward to today however and there's another Galaga style game that may be of interest to anyone owning an MSX, as GameCast Entertainment has released their Galaga/Space Invaders mash up of Defence for the MSXdev22 competition.
Invasion of the Zombie Monsters - A rather cool Amstrad, MSX and ZX Spectrum game that's worth playing!
Here's a really nice looking game you should play if you have an Amstrad CPC, MSX or ZX Spectrum, as trawling through the itch io website, we've come across an action platformer that was developed by Relevo called 'Invasion of the Zombie Monsters'. This game that has been available for some time although we have never featured it on Indie Retro News before. Is a game in which you not only play as the hero NED, but you must traverse multiple levels to save his girlfriend and destroy the Evil One that has cast a huge evil shadow over the city.
Shadow Switcher - The first entry in a brand new MSXdev22 competition!
We've just been contacted through both Facebook and Twitter that as from today through the MSXDev competition as the very first entry, you can now download or play online the latest game release of Shadow Switcher. A new Arcade game by RoboSoft Inc in which the website says is not only another classic-style MSX1 arcade game from Robosoft, but it was created in the style of King’s Valley in which you must traverse platform levels, while also avoiding enemies and collecting items.

Another great news has just hit our inbox and one I think MSX gamers across the globe will be excited for, as if you remember playing the classic space shooter of 'StarForce', which was originally released back in 1984 via the Arcades and in 1985 for the MSX by Hudson Soft. Then as of just recently, we've been informed that you can download a new version of the game by KaikaiKaizou which now features smooth scrolling throughout! Yes that's right no more jittery scrolling in this downloadable MSX game!
Knightmare - HOT NEWS as an Amiga port of a classic MSX game by Konami gets a release!
If you remember the 1986 MSX game of Knightmare, then you might like this hot news story that has just reached our inbox, as we've recently been informed by a good friend of ours on Facebook, that Hoffman finally has finally released the Amiga port of that classic game which has been in development throughout last year. This game according to the creator, puts you in control of Popolon to rescue Aphrodite from the clutches of the evil Prince of Darkness. You have to fight your way through 8 levels of enemies and bosses along the way to rescue the Goddess of Love and Beauty
SymbOS - A rather impressive Z80 multitasking operating system gets a new release
Doom was never officially released on the Amstrad, nor was it released on any other system of that time. Doom was just way beyond in computer development. Thankfully if you have the latest version of SymbOS however which has just been released for the MSX, Amstrad CPC, Enterprise and PCW. You can not only play the latest 8bit version of Doom converted by Prodatron, but many other games such as Sakoban, 2048 and yes even Flappy Bird via this graphically impressive Z80 operating system.
Gelatino 2 - A colourful MSX 1 game which will arrive on your doorsteps before Christmas!
The MSX community are certainly no strangers to quality releases on the MSX especially with great games such as Westen House and The Fall of Prometheus. Well today's news is equally special for the MSX community, as we've recently found out through Facebook, that you can pre-order Physical Dreams awesome looking Arcade game of 'Gelatino 2' ; An upcoming game which has plenty of colourful screens as you try to rescue 45 imprisoned bubbles spread throughout many of the challenging levels.
Turrican has been teased as an early proof of concept for the MSX1 by Geppo's MSX Adventure!
A rather famous game for this early evening is none other than Turrican. A game which has had countless mentions on IRN throughout the years on multiple systems, has now appeared as an early proof of concept with hopeful future development by Geppo's MSX Adventure for the MSX1. Turrican was originally released in 1990 by Rainbow Arts and programmed by Manfred Trenz with an incredible soundtrack by Chris Huelsbeck. The game featured great shooting action, powerful weaponry and amazing game play that is still loved to this day.
Souls Keeper - A cool looking MSX and MSX 2 action platformer is available for pre-order!
While we wait for two amazing releases due this weekend, which for the moment we are keeping it a guarded secret ;) . There's one game that I can mention that might be worth a look as a future release, and that's Oniric Factor's upcoming game of 'Souls Keeper'; An action platformer with cool graphics and gameplay, that can be pre-ordered as a physical release for the MSX and MSX 2. (The game preorder period for the first bunch of cartridges starts on October 29th and ends on November 29th.)
Lunar Rescue - An upcoming Arcade conversion over to the MSX, ColecoVision and SVI
We always try to keep you up to date with the best in retro gaming news, but boy do we have a surprise for you. As if you were an Arcade gamer in the late 70's and into the 80's then you'll be pleased to know Electric Adventures is bringing the classic Taito game of 'Lunar Rescue' to the Colecovision, MSX and SVI as an Arcade conversion. To coincide with this news, the developer has released an early gameplay teaser, with an announcement that the game is currently in a beta state!
Doom on SymbOS - First test on real 4MHz 8bit hardware
Doom was never officially released on the Amstrad, nor was it released on any other system of that time. Doom was just way beyond in computer development. Thankfully if you have a SymbOS however, which is available for your Amstrad CPC, MSX, Amstrad PCW and Enterprise 64/128, you'll soon be able to play Doom. A CPC conversion from Prodatron, original Port for MSX2, and also based on the version written in the 90's by fans for TI-8x calculators, which also use a Z80.
Westen House - A charming isometric game as a nod to classic titles such as Batman and Head Over Heels
There are a lot of readers on our site that remember and have enjoyed the 1980's Isometric Ocean games such as Batman and Head Over Heels on systems such as the Amstrad or ZX Spectrum. So you can see why I just had to mention this cool little game that has just been recommended to us through Twitter, and that's Westen House; an isometric MSX1 game created by Santiago Ontanon 2021 that is available to download and play via github.
The Fall of Prometheus - A fabulous Mythical action puzzler for the MSX is now playable online

Well today's news is equally special for the MSX community, as we've recently found out through Facebook, that you can now play Mystery Labs awesome action puzzle game of 'The Fall of Prometheus' online; A game which has over 30 screens divided in 3 worlds: Tanatos, Garden of Hesperides, and another secret one set in a mythological theme.
Night Knight - A great MSX homebrew from Juan J. Martínez arrives on the C64 by Aris Kavalos
Another great heads up for our Indie Retro News readers, as we've recently been told by Saberman that the previously released game of ' Night Knight ' which was created for the MSX by Juan J. Martinez, is now available for all to enjoy as a digital download for the C64 by Aris Kavalos. This game of which we have featured a number of times before, is a very enjoyable arcade platformer that has been ported over to the C64 much to the delight of the retro community.
No Back Down - A vertical scrolling arcade by game studio SoCal for the MSX
Possibly the last retro gaming article today so others don't get pushed off the page and yes I'm a bit tired, is a brand new game for the MSX called 'No Back Down'. This game developed by SoCal (Vincent, Sylvian, Cedric) for the MSXDev 21 competition, is a vertical scrolling Arcade game in which you need to climb huge towering buildings with caution, because one wrong move and escaping the local law enforcement wont be the only thing you'll be worried about..... You'll probably fall!
