OpenTTD 1.5.3 - Open Source Transport Tycoon Deluxe new final build.


Chris Sawyer is certainly a legend around these parts, better known for games such as the RollerCoaster Tycoon series and Transport Tycoon Deluxe! Thus to get two open source releases this month for those games, most certainly appealed to us. Now we've already done OpenRCT2 so it's time for OpenTTD, which is the open source version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, that this month got a new final build of ' OpenTTD 1.5.3 '.

OpenRCT2 project - Open-Source adaptation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, build 1541


I'm sure many of you remember the awesome game that is RollerCoaster Tycoon 2; a game by Chris Sawyer and published by Infograms in which you manage your very own theme park, with all it's rides, shops, guests and economic fortune. Well that same game has once again been given a rather nice improvement with the latest open source release of the ' OpenRCT2 Project 0.0.4 ' build 1541.

Open Fodder - Open sourced Cannon Fodder reaches version 0.9!


In 1993 Sensible Software and published by Virgin Interactive released one of the best top down war based shooters I have ever played in my life (War has never been so much fun).  It was none other than Cannon Fodder (wiki)! An action-strategy shooter first released for the Amiga and then ported to DOS, Atari ST, Archimedes, Jaguar, Mega Drive, SNES and 3DO. But the news of today comes from Robert Crossfield, the developer behind the open source port of the original as ' Open Fodder '.

Wyrmsun - Free open sourced RTS, that's very much like the 90's Warcraft

OpenTTD 1.5.2 - The latest Open Source Transport Tycoon Deluxe release


As if the open source adaption of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (OpenRCT2 Project) wasn't enough, we've now got another big open source release of the famous game Transport Tycoon Deluxe in the form of OpenTTD 1.5.2. Regarded as one of the most highly regarded releases on our site, OpenTTD brings the original hit classic into the modern age, including a huge range of map sizes, multiple languages, custom made tile sets and graphics, AI, OS range support, LAN/Internet support and many more features and improvements which would probably fill a page!

OpenRCT2 project - Open-Source adaption of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, gets a beta release


I'm sure many of you remember the awesome game that is RollerCoaster Tycoon 2; a game by Chris Sawyer and published by Infograms in which you manage your very own theme park, with all it's rides, shops, guests and economic fortune. Well that same game is now being given a much needed adjustment with the latest release of OpenRCT2 Project. An open source development which improves the game even further with new features, original bug fixes, raised game limits and much more!

Barbarian - ZX Spectrum head chopping classic gets a Sega Megadrive port


This has been one of the best weeks of the last few months for the retro scene so far, as we've had so many games to see either for systems such as the C64 or ZX Spectrum, we've just been blown away. Now it's just got even better as F.L has now announced the release of the 1987 ZX Spectrum head chopping classic 'Barbarian' for the Sega Megadrive! The same developer behind the open source clones of the Amstrad CPC, C64, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST and many others, has now released this version as a rom file which works on a real sega genesis/megadrive, everdrive, and emulators!

OpenTTD 1.5.1 RC1 - Open Source Transport Tycoon Deluxe crash fix update!


In 1995 Microprose released 'Transport Tycoon Deluxe', a game that I would class as the best ever transport simulation game ever. You could run your own transport company, transport goods, make your own railroad set ups, bus routes and much more with the ease of use that a kid could pick up and play! Fast forward to the present and the team behind OpenTTD which is the definite open source version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe have now made available OpenTTD 1.5.1 RC1. See changelog for details.

Wings of Dawn - Standalone space shooter built on the Freespace 2 engine!


In 1999, Violation Inc released one of the greatest space combat simulation games I have ever played, it was titled 'FreeSpace2 and was the sequel to Descent : FreeSpace - The Great War. It had incredible space battles, huge space ships, big laser beams, excellent sound effects and an impressive story to go with it. But through the years it has been ever improved upon with amazing detail, new spin off stories, more improvements and much more, thanks to the open source release of FS2 Open. The feature of today is 'Wings of Dawn' an anime-inspired space shooter which is also built on the FS2 Open engine.

OpenTTD 1.5.0 - Open Source Transport Tycoon Deluxe gets another final build!


True to form once again the developers behind OpenTTD have released another final build on an April Fools day. Regarded as one of the best open source standalone releases based on the incredible Transport Tycoon Deluxe, is now at a grand final build of 1.5.0. Now available with a ton of fixes and updates, you too can play one of Microprose's all time best titles. Run your own transport company, transport goods, make your own railroad set ups, bus routes and much more with the ease of use that a kid could pick up and play!

FreeCol - Open source colonization 0.11.3 release


Another open source game 'FreeCol'; which is based on the very popular title Colonization, has also been updated this month to version 0.11.3. Although it is not a big release unlike FreeCiv v2.5.0, this version does fix a few bugs and clean up yet more annoying problems in version 0.11.0/1/2. FreeCol is based on the highly recommended Sid Meier's Colonization (Microprose) in which the player manages the cross-Atlantic expansion of an established nation in the service of the Crown. Starting off with just a few colonists and looking for new lands, will you succeed for a new nation or be wiped out by the natives.

Freeciv - Open-Source Inspired Civilization game reaches v2.5.0

Outcast 1.1 - An enhanced version of a hit classic, today on Steam!


Even though the previous Kickstarter of Outcast HD was a complete failure, today Fresh3D will be releasing "Outcast 1.1" on Steam ; An enhanced version of that brilliant title from 1999. Outcast is still an all time classic especially for it's time as it offered free-roaming environments, clever reactive AI, great voice acting, over 20hrs of gameplay and much more, it was simply stunning and still loved to this day.

OpenIG : Imperium Galactica Open Source Remake 0.95.201 released


One of the finest space strategy games "Imperium Galactica" originally developed by Digital Reality in 1997 is once again available as an open source version of OpenIG. Now developed by David Karnok which features a ton of improvements over the original game, from a new trade screen, to AI improvements to high quality graphics and random galaxy generators. DOOM RETRO v1.6 - The latest Doom source Halloween release


Brad Harding has just released version 1.6 of DOOM RETRO, a classic, refined DOOM source port for Windows PC. DOOM RETRO has many bug fixes and enhancements, such as 640×400 resolution, wide screen mode with huds up display, more blood splats and with the latest release of 1.6; dynamic shadows, partially submerged objects in liquid and DeHackEd support. A highly recommended source port of the original bloody thirsty classic!

OpenTTD is one of the most popular open source releases on our site, and that comes as no surprise to us as it's a constantly updated open source version of Microprose's hit game Transport Tycoon Deluxe. A game that's so addictive you can look at the clock at 6pm and all of a sudden it's time for bed.
