Slipstream - Rapid retro inspired racer is now available on Steam
Some time back we mentioned the Steam Greenlight success of ' Slipstream '; a game developed by Ansdor as an arcade racer inspired by the visuals, music, games and cars from the 80's and 90's. Well fast forward to this week and that same game is finally available on Steam as a game built on a custom engine with an authentic retro feel and unique graphics!
El Loco Challenge - Lotus inspired WIP C64 Racer gets a game menu theme update!
It wasn't long ago in one of HayesMaker big C64 weekly write ups that he mentioned a very cool looking new Lotus style racer called 'El Loco Challenge' in which is currently in development and the developer JammerC64 is hoping to release as much as possible in time for the Forum64/Protovision game competition. Well fast forward to this lovely sunny day and there's been a new update which shows the game menu as being finished!
Road Avenger - LaserDisc Racer gets a special Amiga release by ReImagine Games!
It's wet outside and it doesn't look as if the sun will come out any time soon, so if like me you're stuck in doors, how about playing the latest Amiga release from our good friends ReImagine Games 'Road Avenger'. Now if you've followed our news you would've read that LaserDisc support was added to the Amiga emulator WinUAE some time ago, as generally LaserDisc games were played via an Arcade cabinet using Amiga 500 hardware, along with a genlock and a laserdisc player. So it stands to reason why many of these games are now appearing on the Amiga such as the more recent Time Gal.
Stunt Car Racer - A brilliant game is being ported to the Atari Jaguar!
While many of you were overjoyed to hear that Stunt Car Racer from the C64 had been ported over to the Atari 8-bit, you probably didn't know that the Atari Jaguar was also getting in on the action! Yes that's right Stunt Car Racer is coming over to the Jaguar, but this time it's being ported from the Atari ST and is being coded by CyranoJ, who was inspired by the A8 version mentioned not long ago!
Stunt Car Racer - The best stunt game comes to the Atari 8-bit!
Of all the games to appear on the Amiga, this in my opinion was one of the best stunt style racers, it had some of the craziest tracks and the ultimate track the "Ski Jump". What made it so good was not just the feeling of speed, but the thrill of accelerating into the sky and coming back down with an almighty crack. It was one of Geoff Crammonds finest games, and now thanks to a team on the AtariAge forums this fantastic game has now appeared on the Atari 8-bit as a port from the C64!
Pole Position - Arcade conversion to the Atari ST is looking pretty damn sweet
During the late 80's Namco released a brilliant arcade racing game called Pole Position, which was designed by Tōru Iwatani, designer of Pac-Man, ending up as one of the most popular arcade racing games of 1982-3. A game which also appeared on multiple systems including the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64/128, Commodore VIC-20, Intellivision, Vectrex, MS-DOS, TI-99/4A and Sinclair ZX Spectrum is about to be shown off as a very high grade conversion and on the Atari ST!
RedPill games competition - AmigaWave aimed high with a new game-making contest!
We've just been contacted by kikems through the EAB forums, of a number of games that have been made available through the AmigaWave Redpill games competition, that is sure to impressive even the most hardy of Amiga gamers. This competition which looks to have ended earlier in June was run by AmigaWave creators of Else We Get Mad! and revolved around the creation of games using the newest of Amiga game creation software, RedPill. This creation software could well be the best yet as going by what we've seen so far, it supports very smooth frame rates and great design features.
CannonBall - Enhanced Outrun engine requires fast Amiga - Vampire or better!
The day has only just begun and already Indie Retro News is on the case with the latest news, as here we have the latest enhanced engine edition of Outrun as 'CannonBall' released for the Amiga by Modern Vintage Gamer 2017. Now this game was first released in 1986 by Sega in the Arcades, with later ports to systems such as the Amstrad, Amiga and many others, but sadly many of the ports were shockingly poor such as the Amiga with bad graphics and not so good frame rates. This Enhanced Outrun Engine edition improves the game ten fold, with not just arcade like graphics but superior frame rates, although a Vampire or better is highly recommended!
Super Pilot - F-Zero and Wipeout styled racer gets greenlit and an early demo
If you loved F-Zero or even Wipeout then this might be the game for you! 'Super Pilot' by dopagames is a fast paced futuristic racing game, where you can race against upto 50 opponents at break neck speeds and perhaps beating the opposition to the finishing line. Furthermore the game also features the ability to design and share your own tracks by adding loops, twists, making it vertical, upside-down, or whatever you'd like, using the developers powerful and easy-to-use track editor.
Graftgold : The Complete Amiga Works - A top notch unofficial Amiga CD32 release!
Well that's enough of the C64 for the time being, as we now look towards the Amiga CD32 for our news with a rather special release from Amiga Jay ' Graftgold : The Complete Amiga Works '. Announced earlier today, this is a fully packed CD of many of Graftgold's most popular games, an independent game developer that began in the 1980s, producing and publishing a number of computer games on a variety of 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit platforms.
Famicom Grand Prix II : 3D Hot Rally - An entertaining Famicom racer fully translated
Super Mario Kart wasn't the only classic Nintendo racing game that Mario and Luigi star'd in, but way before that in 1988 in Japan they also appeared in the enjoyable racing game ' Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally ', which only recently has been fully translated into English on the Famicom system by AgentOrange and team. Playing in a similar style to that of Rad Racer with a flavour of other racing games of that era, you must drive as fast as possible around each of the 3 tracks against the time limit to win the race!
Stunt Car Racer - The best stunt car game on the Amiga easily launch-able on PC and MAC
Of all the games to appear on the Amiga, this in my opinion was one of the best stunt style racers and one of Geoff Crammonds finest games, it had some of the craziest tracks ever with one of them being the ultimate track the "Ski Jump". Yet what made it so good was not just the feeling of speed, but the thrill of accelerating into the sky and coming back down with an almighty crack, especially if you end up missing the track altogether. So you can probably see why I'm just that little bit excited to play the best Amiga version but on a PC or MAC with an easy to launch set up thanks to Gamesnostalgia and of course emulation software FS-UAE by Frode Solheim.
Wacky Wheels HD - An official reboot of Apogee's classic racer for the PC
There's probably not a person out there today that hasn't played or even heard of Nintendo's Mario Kart on the SNES, but have you ever played Apogee Software's 1994 MS-DOS game Wacky Wheels? Well if you haven't, it might be worth your time checking out the official reboot of the game in glorious HD by Ferocity2d, which is available to buy for the PC today. Wacky Wheels HD is an all-new game with unique tracks and features based on the original game and its contemporaries. It draws inspiration from Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Konami Crazy Racers, Atari Karts, and more
OutRun CPC - An Amstrad CPC style remake of a hit racer gets a beta update
In 1986 Sega released one of the coolest racers of our time, it was none other than Out Run. An Arcade racer designed by Yu Suzuki, that was not only a commercial success but became one of the best selling games of its time with great graphics, fantastic music and fast paced track racing. It was just a shame however, the Amstrad CPC port was terrible with poor frame rates, colours and sound effects. So it was no wonder, a creator by the name of barbarian.1987 set out to fix all these problems while making the game incredibly smooth since 2012 as a PC port called ' OutRun CPC '.
The evolution of Formula 1 racing games 1976-2015 via jdmikeg4
I've always been amazed how far we've come in computer games, and how graphically impressive they are to almost life like situations instead of how they looked all those years ago. One such video which was shown in 2015, gave us a look into the evolution of Formula 1 racing games, from 1976 all the way up to 2015. Impressive indeed, but one that stood out for me, is the excellent Amiga racer ' Grand Prix ' by Microprose, which for its time was rather eye opening.
Gravity Star Rescue Racer - Early work in progress Arcade game inspired by Thrust
Denis Evans from the wicked retro gaming store The Retro Cavern, has contacted me about his new game that's in development for Mac, iOS, Android, and possibly PC via HTML5, 'Gravity Star Rescue Racer'. Taking inspirations from that classic game Thrust but with a unique twist, Gravity Star Race is more of a shoot em up affair as you have to blast everything under ground while keeping an eye on your shield level.
Chase HQ - A ZX Spectrum Ocean classic, reviewed!
All hail Chase HQ! Bow before thee! Kneel at the altar and praise the gods at Ocean for creating this masterpiece. *gets on knees and prays* When it comes to arcade conversions, there are few equal to that of this piece of Spectrum genius. All the fun of the original arcade game (minus the seats - except the one on your sofa, I guess) has been squeezed into your modest little Speccy's memory, somehow, and makes this one of the most accomplished games for our hallowed machine. Unless of course, you don't like driving games, in which case you may think it's rubbish. But, for those of us who do like driving games - buckle up!
Badlands - Post-apocalyptic Amiga arcade racer playable on PC
It's going to be a gamesnostalgia day today as a number of Amiga games have been packed up and made easily runnable on a PC via FS-UAE. The first game is none other than the spiritual successor to Super Sprint ' Badlands ', which was a post-apocalyptic themed arcade racing game giving you the opportunity to blast away the competition using both cannon and missile. With each race won you'll be able to spend money on cool upgrades such as turbo's and increase speed before the themed track changes and you've got to do it all again.
Isometric Racer Collection - An unofficial 9 game CD32 Release from Amiga Jay!
Wednesday has just begun in style as Amiga Jay has released the next Unofficial Amiga CD32 pack of games that features more than your average racer. This is the ' Isometric Racer Collection ' a 9 game classic Amiga top racing bonanza for your Amiga CD32, with games such as All Terrain Racing (Team 17, 1995), Badlands (Domark, 1990), Indy Heat (Sales Curve, 1992), Powerdrive (US Gold, 1994), Rally Championships (Flair), Rally Cross Challenge (Anco, 1989), Super Off-Road (Virgin, 1990), Ultimate Super Skidmarks (Acid Software, 1998) and Wheelspin (Black Legend, 1995). If you love isometric racers you'd be mad not to miss this!
Pico-Sprint - Arcade Pico-8 racer gets a Super Sprint tribute
Way back in 1986 I was to play a top down arcade racing game that had its very own steering wheel, and drained my cash from my pocket. That game was Super Sprint by Atari Games, a game which had multiple system ports and featured 4 player racing which pushed you to frustration as you tried to come first place against the AI in every race! It featured multiple track types and cool sounds which made it a whole ton of fun and addictive as hell. It is that game which is being mentioned today, because at the end of last year Reload released Pico-Sprint which is a tribute to Super Sprint but on the Pico-8
