Castlevania is coming to the Sega Master System and here's some cool footage!

Castlevania has been featured many times on Indie Retro News, from Castlevania Spectral Interlude and Vampire Slayer Demo on the ZX Spectrum, to Castlevania VBXE on the Atari XL/XE(VBXE). But here's another update you might like to know about if you love this classic game. As we have been told that Xfixium, who is also behind the Golden Axe Tyris Edition, is working on bringing Castlevania over to the Sega Master System! In light of this news, we have some footage of the game and further info from Xfixium and Louis The Sega Nerd who is doing the audio.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (ARCADE) is being ported over to the Sega Master System!

Brawlers, beat 'em ups, fighters or what ever you may call them are extremely popular on this site. There is nothing better than getting into an unrealistic arcade fighting situation, giving someone the smack down and having no real life consequences. So here we are with another beat 'em up update, as we've recently found out through twitter, that my personal favorite of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is coming to the Sega Master System as a port of the original arcade version of TMNT.

Golden Axe Tyris Flare Edition - A graphical replacement hack available for the Sega Master System

In 1989 Sega released the incredible side scrolling, beat 'em up, hack and slash fighter for the Arcades and for the Mega Drive/Genesis. It involved lots of weapon swiping against enemies and big bosses, riding mythical beasts, different levels, picking up potions, calling forth great power and giving the player the choice of a multitude of different characters. It just had to be the amazing ' Golden Axe '; a game which was also ported to other home systems such as DOS, Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad, C64, SMS, and ZX Spectrum.

Alex Kidd 3 Curse In Miracle World - HOT NEWS as High grade SMS fan game gets a release!

In 1987 Sega released the great side-scrolling platform game ' Alex Kidd ' for the Sega Master System console. Although it was first released in Japan in 1986 but internationally in 1987, it was one of the most well known games as it was also built into most Master System II's. In actual fact it was so well loved that a fan by the name of Yeti Bomar (aka Watain) has announced the release of the incredible looking fan game of 'Alex Kidd 3 - Curse In Miracle World'  for the Sega Master System.

Pitman - A homebrew puzzle platformer for the Sega Master System

We haven't featured any Sega Master System games for awhile so to change all that, here's a nice little game you can play right now, it's Pitman developed by under4mhz. Yes indeed thanks to a heads up via i_am_sverx on twitter, we now know that this game is a fun little puzzle game and features multiple levels of enjoyment as you must collect all the diamonds on the level to move on to the next.

Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death - In development Sega Master System version of a great game teased


As many of you were aware by now, Collector Vision Games had released a great game called Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death for the SNES in which you play as Sydney trapped inside an ancient volcanic cavern and the aim to survive and win your freedom. Well if you don't have a SNES and instead a Sega Master System, you'll be pleased to know Collector Vision Games has shown off the latest work in progress footage of this upcoming SMS game!

Cimmerian - Graphically impressive 'Barbarian' coming to the Sega Master System and Mega Drive


I have decided to save the best till last, as during our trip through Twitter we've come across what looks to be a graphically impressive "pseudo" port of the famous Barbarian, which originally appeared on many different systems including the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, C64, ZX Spectrum and  Atari ST. Titled as 'Cimmerian' and developed by Ichigobankai, with its first showing for the SMSPower! Competition in 2016. This updated development looks better than ever with stunning high quality detail, which will not only be coming to the Sega Master System but also the Sega Mega Drive too!

SMS Power! Competition 2018 - The Sega Master System comp finished with cool stuff to play!


During the early part of this year one of our most favourite sites for the Sega Master System called SMS Power! Ran a competition with multiple categories for users around the world to come together to make hacks, music and new games, as a way to show off their talent but also to win one of the competitions areas. Thankfully lots of people got involved which means loading up your old retro SMS was well worth doing.

Silver Valley - Multi-genre game released for the Sega Master System


If you have a Sega Master System or running an emulator, then you might be interested to know a developer by the name of Enrique Ruiz has released the first version of a multi-genre game for the SMS called  ' Silver Valley '. A game which has been in development for some months now, looks to be a mash of other games such as Castlevania or Wonderboy and features not just platforming but also flying, shooting and even sailing through 64 or more levels, all contained with a story driving the action.

For anyone that has played that great game, will be pleased to know Yeti Bomar (aka Watain) has released the Alex Kidd 2 - Curse in the Miracle World demo, which is an eye popping Sega Master System hack of the original game made with KiddEd.

Sonic 2 ReMastered - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 enhanced on the SMS by MrCat


Do we have some great retro gaming news for you, as that legendary game character Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog game series, which appeared on multiple systems, especially the Sega Master System based in our feature today has been given a short enhanced release by MrCat. Released via the SHC2016 website, this remastered hack takes the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game from 1992 and instead has 3 all-new zones, complete with new layouts and artwork!

Action Fighter - An early SMS prototype of a commercial racing shooter


In 1986 Sega released the top down racing shooter ' Action Fighter ' for the Arcades and later over to the Sega Master System. The aim of the game was to speed ahead in a multitude of vehicles such as a sports car, jet , jetski, helicopter or F1 while blasting or bumping everything in your way. It was a very enjoyable game that has reappeared this month but this time as a very early prototype with a number of differences compared to the retail release.

Sky Fighter - A SMS Shoot em up dump is the first version available on the internet


Even more retro goodness from our friends SMS Power is the recently internet released 'Sky Fighter' for the Sega Master System. This game by Clover Soft 1990 is a top scrolling shoot em up that according to SMS Power, was first discussed in HG101 article on Clover Soft, showing a single screen from an advertisement. It was apparently released on both MSX and SMS, but up to this day the MSX version hasn't surfaced. This SMS dump of the game is the first version available on the internet.

CIMMERiAN - Head chopping Barbarian port with jaw dropping SMS detail


I have decided to save the best till last, and I believe with this new Sega Master System port demo, I think you'll agree the detail is just mind blowing. Developed by Ichigobankai for the SMSPower! competition 2016, ' CIMMERiAN ' is a high graphical quality "pseudo" port of the famous Barbarian, which appeared on many different systems including the Amiga. If you don't remember the game, you control a Barbarian in a single screen combat scenario and must use sword chopping movements to put your opponent to the ground, with or without his head.

Bara Burū - A new Arcade homebrew for the Sega Master System


With all those Alex the Kidd games released this week, you'd probably think we were going to mention another one, but now it's time for something completely different. This is ' Bara Burū ', developed by Kagesan, for the Sega Master System. An Arcade game released during the coding competition 2016 with some rather interesting inspirations. In fact, if you went by what everyone else was saying on the forums, this is Shinobi Kidd meets Bubble Bobble!

Ma Kai Quest - A total conversion of Alex Kidd in Miracle World for the SMS


This day just gets better and better, as after already mentioning the Alex Kidd in Miracle World 2 mod for the Sega Master System, along comes another one that is sure to appeal to many of our readers. Unlike the previous fan based sequel of that very enjoyable game from the late 80's by Sega, this one is called ' Ma Kai Quest ' and is a total conversion of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, released by badsector, thelowestdefinition, Mandulin & Calindro.

Lander 2 - Lunar Lander inspired release for the SMS!


In 1979 Atari Inc released Lunar Lander for the Arcade, and the object of the game was to pilot a lunar module onto the moon via a safe landing. Using vectored thrust you had to avoid obstacles such as the landscape while safely navigating to the required spot for a successful completion. I found it very enjoyable for its time and was pleased to hear of an inspired release for the SMS during the 2015 coding competition called 'Lander 2'.
