We've certainly had our fair share of Command and Conquer news on this site, especially featuring top quality standalones such as Twisted Insurrection and The Dawn of the Tiberium Age. But this latest news goes even further! OpenRCT2 wasn't the only open source version of a famous game that's worthy of a mention today, as we've also found out that the open source release of 'FreeCiv' has reached a bug fixed version of 2.6.2. If you haven't heard of FreeCiv before, it is based around the all conquering and empire building hit 1991 stragety game Civilization, which in itself is inspired by the history of the human civilization.

OpenTTD is one of the most popular open source releases on our site, and that comes as no surprise to us as it's a constantly updated open source version of Microprose's hit game Transport Tycoon Deluxe. A game that's so addictive you'll be spending hours developing your very own transport tycoon company well into the early hours and possibly beyond! So why are we mentioning this game again? The Fertile Crescent - In development RTS inspired by Age of Empires

I know there are many people out there that love playing games such as Age of Empires or Rise of Nations, so here's a game I think you might also enjoy, and that's 'The Fertile Crescent' by LincRead. Although the game is still in development, this game is a Real Time Strategy game set during the Bronze Age in the Ancient Near East, in which you must protect your people against and eventually defeat an enemy tribe on an auto-generated map.

AQUABYSS - Previously announced Amiga game by AgedCode gets new screenshots

Last year we were the first site to officially announce a new Amiga called ' AQUABYSS ', a game which at the time we didn't have a lot of information about, but we were able to show a rather nice teaser trailer, and a story set in June 1821, in which you travel from Paris to the French coast and visit the very depths of the ocean to discover what lies underneath the surface. Well fast forward to today however and not only do we have more information, but new screenshots of the game which can be viewed below.

Master of Magic - A classic 4x strategy game by Microprose reviewed by DarkwyndPT

Like I said in my previous review, this time we’ll take a look at one of my personal favourite games of all times and perhaps the most in-depth game I’ve ever played, Master of Magic. Master of Magic is a 4X strategy game developed by Simtex and published by MicroProse. It was originally released in 1994 for DOS and ported for the PC-98 in 1996.

Here Be Dragons - Satirical turn based strategy game available through early access

Here on Indie Retro News we love it when developers take a side step away from your typical genre and add their own degree of humour to make their games fresh and unique, which is certainly the case with Here Be Dragons by Red Zero Games. This latest game on Steam which as of this moment is still in early access, is a satirical turn-based strategy game featuring unique "living map" graphics, where you lead a group of crazed captains and eradicate legendary monsters in order to allow Christopher Columbus the discovery of the New World.

UFO: Enemy Unknown - A brilliant Strategy game reviewed by Cola Powered Gamer

When someone asks you what is the best turn-based strategy game, you can confidently say UFO: Enemy Unknown.

UFO: Enemy Unknown (or X-COM: UFO Defense as it was known in North America), released in 1994, and developed Mythos Games and published by MicroProse. UFO: Enemy Unknown was originally planned as a sequel for 1988 game Laser Squad, also developed by Julian Gollop the developer of UFO/XCOM Franchise. UFO: Enemy Unknown is an amalgamation of all of the games Gollop previously worked on, with some expanded concepts. The first games that Gollop developed were also strategy games such as Rebelstar Raiders (1984), Laser Squad (1988) and their sequels were all turn-based strategy games, so Gollop already had a solid foundation to build his next game.

Theme Park - One of the best theme park strategy games gets a DarkwyndPT review!

Now, we’re just upping the ante, aren’t we? Still, it’s impossible to make a Bullfrog retrospective without mentioning another critical and commercial successful title, which is perhaps their most colourful game that also begun its own influential series. I’m talking about Theme Park.

Theme Park is a managerial strategy game developed by Bullfrog and published by Electronic Arts. It was originally released in 1994 for the 3DO, Commodore Amiga, DOS and Macintosh. The following year, it was ported to the Amiga CD32, FM Towns, Genesis/Megadrive, Jaguar, PC-98, Playstation, Sega Mega-CD, Sega Saturn and SNES/Super Nintendo. In 2007, it was remade for the Nintendo DS and in 2008, that remake was ported for the Playstation 3 and PSP and in 2012, it was ported for the PS Vita. In 2013, the original version was re-released for Windows and Macintosh. There’s also an iOS remake with microtransactions which was released in 2011, but it wasn’t as well received (I wonder why).

Populous - A brilliant Strategy game reviewed by DarkwyndPT

Well, it isn’t too hard to figure out which Bullfrog game I’ll start reviewing for this retrospective. And it’s only fair that I start with Bullfrog’s first and possibly biggest success ever: Populous.

Populous is a managerial/strategy game developed by Bullfrog and published by Electronic Arts. It was originally released in 1989 for the Amiga, Atari ST and DOS. The following year, it was ported to the Genesis/Megadrive, PC-98, Sharp X68000 and the SNES/Super Nintendo. In 1991, it was ported to the Master System and Turbografx-16. In 1992, it was ported to the Acorn 32-bit and the following year for the Macintosh. In 2011, it was re-released for Windows.

Panzer - Strategy game released by Sputnik World for the C64

Moving away from the platformers and shoot em ups, we now look towards Sputnik World for our C64 goodness. As unlike those genres, this one is a strategy game set in World War 2 called 'Panzer'. This game released just recently, pits your tanks against other tanks as you move around the map area to take control of a multitude of enemy bases to complete the mission.

Pathway - Beautifully pixelated strategy RPG set in the 1930s!

Another great looking game and no not a retro game that can be launched on an Amiga or C64 is Robotality and Chucklefish's Strategy RPG ' Pathway ', which can be purchased right now via GOG or Steam. This game that stood out on our twitter feed as an Indiana Jones style graphical experience, is a Strategy RPG set in the 1930's great desert wilderness, in which you must outwit your enemies in daring turn-based combat while raiding occult tombs!

Freeciv - A worthy Open-Source Inspired Civilization game!

It's a bit of an open source day today as another game had reached an updated build (although some time ago), is the all conquering and empire building game ' FreeCiv ', which is a free and open source empire-building strategy game based on the Civilization title inspired by the history of the human civilization.

Space Moguls - C64 game inspired by M.U.L.E looks very good indeed

Protovision is kicking it up a notch this week as they have announced three games that are in development with one of them being a rather nice looking M.U.L.E inspired game called ' Space Moguls ' for the C64. Currently being coded by C-H SkÃ¥rstedt‏ @Sakrac with music by Stein Pedersen, this one is a top down grid based strategy game that will have up to 4 player support, graphical landscapes such as woodland areas and lakes, granting land, town with services, and droids that are available to give you that helping hand.

The Settlers (Blue Byte game, Commodore Amiga, 1993) reviewed by AlanG

Settlers is a real time strategy game, simulating the building and expansion of a medieval type settlement. Released for the Amiga in 1993 it was the first game of its type on any platform, the IBM PC release not following for another year. It gave rise to countless follow ups and even the smash hit modern-day tablet game ‘Clash of Clans’ has its roots firmly planted in Settlers' territory. You can play against another human opponent or against up to three of a selection of potential computer opponents each with varying ‘personalities’. Everything is controlled via the mouse by using a series of on-screen menus.

Mages of Aethelion - NES strategy game is in development

It's not often we mention new strategy games coming to the NES, but Estlib and with the help of MS-DOS, have announced they are working on a NES strategy game called Mages of Aethelion, which they hope to be a feature complete turn-based exploration experience. Now before you get your hopes up, there is a long way to go as the game is still in development and the screenshots below will be subject to change, especially the terrain.

DwarfCorp - Dwarf Fortress meets Dungeon Keeper in this rather interesting strategy game!

During 2013 we announced the Kickstarter for Completely Fair Games 'DwarfCorp'; a Dungeon Keeper, Dwarf Fortress mix, in which you needed to lead a colony of dwarves in their quest for profit in a strange new land inhabited by hostile and savage creatures. This game ended up as a Kickstarter success raising $45,783 and was due to be released as a beta during 2014. Yet fast forward to this month and the game is not only available as an early access title, but it's on Steam for Windows, Mac OS X, and SteamOS + Linux
