Mega Splatterhouse - 1988/89 Arcade Splatterhouse is coming to the Sega Mega Drive!

With the Caffeine just about kicking in and a HOT news story that's well worth a mention. We've just been informed by the Scorpion Engine creator Earok, that Monster Bath Games Inc is working on bringing the epic and very gory side scrolling slasher of 'Splatterhouse' to the Sega Mega Drive as 'Mega Splatterhouse'. As in the words of the creator "So for the past 2 weeks I took a break from working everyday to... work. Decided to try out Scorpion Engine to make a Sega MegaDrive/Genesis game. How's it looking so far? ;)"

For those of you who never played the original at the Arcades or the TurboGrafx-16, FM Towns Marty version, here's what the wikipedia page says about the game "Splatterhouse is an arcade-style sidescrolling beat 'em up with platform elements in which the player controls Rick, a parapsychology college major who is trapped inside West Mansion. After his resurrection by the Terror Mask, Rick makes his way through the mansion, fighting off hordes of creatures in a vain attempt to save his girlfriend Jennifer from a grisly fate."

  • While we don't have a release date for Mega Splatterhouse, Earok has also informed us in regards to an Amiga or NeoGeo version, "the fact that it's a Scorpion game doesn't preclude an Amiga or NeoGeo release in future". And that's all we have so far, so watch this space.

    1. Not Erik but well versed in the engine and specs: Not without significant cutbacks. Would work on A1200.

Yes is right, on every Amiga AGA (CD32/A1200/A4000) this would work without any problem, in fact it could even be improved in terms of the amount of colors used at the same time and the number of sprites moved at the same time on the screen, to get an idea just take a look at the wonderful Turrican 2 AGA.

    3. what would be the cutbacks on ECS ? i can think a lot of games with much better graphics

    4. A lot of massive things moving around with way more colour than is viable in an ECS game. You’d have to halve the frame rate to get good performance as most stuff would likely have to be bobs, not sprites.

    5. Infact, keep in mind that from OCS-ECS to AGA (most powerful Amiga chipset) there is a large difference in graphics terms, the megadrive is positioned around the half between those, also if more close to OCS-ECS.

    6. Here some specs to help people to better understand, one of key aspects on Retro systems is the colors number displayed simultaneously on screen, this aspect is crucial since it defines sprites/backgrounds quality and definition :
      Amiga OCS-ECS use 32 from 4096 (total) [16-bit]
      Megadrive/Genesis use 64 from 512 (total) [16-bit]
      Amiga AGA use 256 from 16.777.216 (total) [24-bit]

  2. Cool, I remember this for the PC Engine. The Amiga has had a load of homebrew arcade conversions, it is nice to see the Megadrive getting some arcade ports as well.

  4. OMG .. what is this ? Scorpion engine is allowing INCREDIBLE things !! A Splatterhouse custom ver. for megadrive with different details and colors, everything is move so well on screen .. and this is just the beginning .. of a GREAT title that Megadrive never had !!

  6. Great news as Splatter House was missing from the Sega Mega Drive. May I suggest that it includes more weapons , 2 player mode and more, because many will end up playing the Arcade version because the Arcade hardware is more powerful, so an enhanced versio of Splatter House will entice more people to try it out.

  8. Finally !!! People with obsessive compulsive disorders will not have to suffer the absence of a Splatterhouse 1 on megadrive when there is a 2 and 3 !!!

  9. Two problems with the generally pretty-good Splatterhouse 2 on the SMD were the replacement of the hockey mask (presumably for IP reasons) and the weak sound effects. Whilst the music in this seems a little pared down from the arcade version, I'm delighted to hear that the sound effects are very close.
