Bio Menace - Thrillogy - Apogee Software's Bio Menace (1993, MS-DOS) ported to the Amiga (HIGH END)

The classic MS-DOS side-scroller Bio Menace, originally published by Apogee Software in 1993, has been un-officially ported over to the Commodore Amiga by Astair86. Amiga owners can now experience Snake Logan's entire pixelated battle against mutant hordes, as this new port features all three original episodes in a completely finished, fully playable state. Because the port utilizes the reconstructed game source code, the developer has made the underlying engine code available under the GPLv2 license.

DOS Gameplay

Crucially, the entire package remains completely free to enjoy. Apogee Software officially reclassified the full Bio Menace trilogy as freeware back in 2018, which allows the original game data files to be distributed legally alongside this new Amiga engine without any cost. While the software license covers the newly coded engine, the game data itself remains under Apogee's freeware terms. This is a full, unrestricted release rather than an old-school shareware disc or a limited game demo, meaning the community is free to share and pass along the unmodified episodes to fellow Amiga fans worldwide.

According to the porter bringing the MS-DOS classic to Amiga hardware came with significant technical hurdles, particularly in balancing smooth scrolling against visual artifacting. While minor screen glitches may occasionally pop up, the developer confirms these have been mostly ironed out. Players should note a few hardware quirks depending on their setup: while standard cursor keys work perfectly on an Amiga 2000 keyboard, Amiga 1200 users will need to use the numeric keypad for movement to avoid key-jamming issues when pressing multiple buttons simultaneously, such as crouching and firing. Additionally, CD32 controller support has been coded into the port, though the developer notes it remains untested due to a lack of physical hardware.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Kickstart 2.0 or newer, roughly 1 MB of chip RAM plus some fast RAM (8MB or more).
  • Developed and tested on WinUAE, a PiStorm and a Vampire V4.
  • The game takes over the display and hands it back on exit, so run it from a shell rather than from Workbench.
Please note I'm not sure how this was ported over and if any AI was used as it states porting, Amiga platform layer, audio and pre-rendering tools, testing was done by Astair86.

  1. Nice to see it, but the specs are quite high considering BioMenace ran on a 286 in 16 colours and PC Speaker and with no custom chips to speed it up.

    1. Needs more testers really. See how it fairs on lower specs 👍
