Puzzle Bobble - A bubble popping Arcade classic arrives on the Commodore Amiga as an AI AGA edition
dlfrsilver who was behind the recent Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge & Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis AGA AI ports, has announced the release of Puzzle Bobble AGA for the Amiga 1200. Written natively in 680x0 assembly code, this project represents the very first time a game from Neo Geo hardware or Taito's System B has been directly ported to the A1200. The game adapts Taito's iconic 1994 tile-matching arcade classic—originally famous for its cute Japanese aesthetic, vibrant music, and addictive bubble-popping mechanics—and optimises it for a Amiga 1200 processor and its advanced AGA chipset. Please note, while it does say stock Amiga 1200's, users have said it requires a 030/50mhz for full speed and to be smooth, the developer disregards this and says it works fine on 68020 + Fast Ram (4mb).
(Stock Performance, hence needing a 68030/50)
The port relies on heavy custom engineering to replicate the neogeo within the Amiga's hardware limitations. To bring the vibrant arcade visuals to life, the game runs at a 320 × 224 resolution utilizing a full 256 colours, using hardware-driven vertical scrolling for the starfield backgrounds and utilizing pairs of wide 64-pixel AGA sprites handled via the Copper for logos and credits. Audio is handled by a custom streaming engine which manages Paula’s DMA channels using just 4 KiB of precious Chip RAM for gameplay buffers, keeping the primary music and sound banks tucked away in Fast RAM.
Developed alongside OpenAI's Codex coding agent to decipher the arcade's original 68000 logic, the finished game has been validated on real A1200 hardware. The game features 30 single-player rounds or you can challenge a friend in an 11-round two-player joystick battle, complete with evolving backgrounds and arcade-accurate animation states. The release also boasts a custom F1 settings menu featuring a Sound Test, credit configurations, the ability for a second player to hot-join mid-game, and hard drive saving functionality to preserve high scores.

ReplyDeleteNo way ! The game is smooth on my Amiga 1200 + 8mo fast ram.
Is there a version that’s already set up? Do all AGA games need to be installed? I can never seem to get it running with RetroBat.
