Splatterhouse - A gory slasher arrives on the Amiga via Modern Vintage Gamer

Modern Vintage Gamer who was behind Gunsmoke AGA and Zippy Race A500,  has unofficially brought the ultimate nightmare to the Amiga with a port of Namco’s horror classic, Splatterhouse, specifically rebuilt for the Amiga AGA. Players can finally step into Rick's shoes, don the iconic terror mask, and brave the creature-infested mansion to rescue Jennifer. This ambitious conversion delivers the complete seven-stage arcade-style adventure directly to the A1200 and other AGA-equipped machines. It also supports standard joysticks as well as CD32 controllers for an authentic, responsive gameplay experience.

The game has been meticulously reverse-engineered into portable C code, optimizing it for both speed and accuracy. By utilizing the Amiga’s Dual Playfield mode, copper lists, and clever double buffering, the port hopes to achieve both smooth scrolling and massive hardware sprites with ease. While the visuals feature slight colour approximations to fit the Amiga's planar format, it remains incredibly faithful to the PC Engine original. Furthermore, the game features automatic PAL and NTSC detection alongside a manual toggle for 50/60fps playback, ensuring the action runs at the correct speed regardless of your setup.

On the audio front, the release is a bit of a treat as well. The package includes a fully rearranged, four-channel ProTracker soundtrack where game sound effects intelligently take priority over audio channels without disrupting the atmosphere. For those playing via WHDLoad or on a CD32 console, the game unlocks bonus CDDA audio. This allows players to freely toggle between the original arcade CD soundtrack, the PC Engine music, or the newly crafted ProTracker arrangements. Whether you prefer the the Western version or the original Japanese presentation, this definitive home port stands as a technical achievement for the Amiga community, especially as over the years there has been many calls to port this game to the Amiga.

  1. Awesome—the Amiga scene has literally exploded; they're porting games you'd never have imagined.
My dream? It would be great to see a good port of one of the *Street Fighter 2* games and a well-done *Ghosts ‘n’ Ghosts*.

  2. Things were much better back in the day, when the Amiga had its own games ,unlike these outdated ones.
