So much for my weekend break with pain issues! As a hidden gem from Konami’s classic MSX2 library has made its way over to the Commodore Amiga. Talented developer Hoffman, behind the recent ports of Metal Gear and Knightmare, has hopefully developed a faithful, near 1:1 port of the Japanese platformer Treasure of Usas. Designed to run smoothly on a standard Amiga 500 equipped with 512kb of chip RAM and 512kb of other RAM, this release brings a lesser-known 8bit adventure to the 16-bit system. The most notable upgrade in this version is a modification allowing the game to run at 50/60Hz, providing a much slicker and more fluid gameplay experience than the original hardware could manage.
Amiga owners can dive into the action via ADF floppy images as a 1.0 version, though the creator notes that a convenient WHDLoad package for hard drive users may follow in the future. While this initial release focuses on capturing the nostalgia of the original classic, a heavily upgraded version is already on the horizon. The upcoming enhanced edition will feature completely overhauled graphics by Toni Galvez, a fresh soundtrack by BanjoGuyOllie, and a brand-new suite of sound effects. ReplyDeleteOne of my greatest obsessions in retro gaming are the Japanese games we never got to play in the west. So many of these games have unique gameplay and elements that are obscure to what we are used to which is probably why we never got them. This looks like a treasure trove. The best part is once again that it is Konami. GetsuFumaDen is just one of a few too many games from Konami that didn’t make it to the west until recent years. Konami was pretty much the most exciting company in gaming in the late 80’s and 90’s. Great to see another game surface. Some of the best news we have received this year on this fantastic web site.
