1942 - A classic Arcade Shooter arrives on the Atari 7800 and it's GOOD!

In 1984 a great shoot em up was released for the Arcade by Capcom and that game was 1942. A game in which you shoot down enemy planes, avoided being shot out of the sky and performed awesome rolls while collecting power ups. One of the more unusual power ups was being escorted by two other planes in formation that gave you the edge. It was an awesome game and still is today, but the news of right now is thanks to a heads up in our email, we've been told Playsoft has released the Arcade game of 1942 for the Atari 7800, and yes it's bloody good too!

Galaxian on the Atari 7800 really looks like a fantastic conversion/port!

Galaxian has appeared on Indie Retro News a few times over the years, especially as it is one particular Arcade classic that homebrew developers love making clones of with special effects and bonus power ups added. Well this time we are going back to the original hit from 1979, as PacManPlus is aiming to bring that retro shoot em up classic over to the Atari 7800 with all the nostalgia intact such as the sound effects and animated enemy waves.

Now here's a blast from the past, as we've just been informed that the classic Arcade game of 'Popeye', is coming to the Atari 7800 as an Arcade conversion by SeeSaw(Darryl Guenther). In a similar vein to Donkey Kong albeit not as good, you play as Popeye and must collect hearts, musical notes and the letters H-E-L-P that the lovable character Olive drops from the top of the screen. But be warned, just like the cartoon, Brutus will get in your way with the help of the bad Sea Hag!

If you had a ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, C64, NES or Amiga, chances are you would've played ' Cybernoid '; a shoot 'em up published in 1987 by Hewson Consultants that is regarded by many as a very challenging, albeit very enjoyable game with fabulous music by Jeroen Tel or Jochen Hippel (ST). Well if you do remember the game and did have a chance to play it, you might be interested to know,  that as of right now you can try out Muddyfunster's Cybernoid early inspiration called E.X.O; an upcoming game which has been demo'd on the Atari 7800

Even more retro gaming news to get through today and the first one is a well known Arcade game called ' Baby Pac-Man ', which is still at a work in progress stage and is coming to the Atari 7800 by the developer Bob Decrescenzo at some point next year. This game was first released by Bally Midway way back in 1982 and is based on a baby like version of Pac-Man that also has to eat dots in a maze style gaming screen while also avoiding the ghosts. The similarities end there however, as the game also contains a pinball mode in which the player must hit a target with a metal ball for extra bonuses, when the player fails to keep the ball in play it's back to the Baby Pac-Man mode!

Spire of the Ancients - A work in progress dungeon crawler on the Atari 7800

Dungeon Crawlers as you well know are my personal favourite, from the legends that are Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder, to the more modern Legend of Grimrock, and the upcoming Aeon of Sands. But this one is a bit of an eye opener, as if you think an Amstrad CPC crawler is impressive wait to you see this work in progress game called ' Spice of the Ancients ', which is being coded for the Atari 7800 by BHB Smith!

A look back at a much maligned classic Ninja Golf on the 7800

Ninja Golf is one of those games that's best known as a meme. Its not something you actually play, more something you show off to illustrate how gonzo-wacky you are. So please allow me to talk about Ninja Golf to illustrate how gonzo-wacky I am.

Double Dragon - Beat em up enhanced for the Atari 7800

In 1987-1988 a fantastic beat 'em up video game developed by Technōs Japan and distributed in North America and Europe by Taito was to take centre stage with two-player cooperative gameplay and the ability to use weapons from disarmed enemies. ' Double Dragon ' as it was titled, was one of the greatest beat em ups I've ever played on the Amiga, and it would probably come as a surprise that it was also ported over to a vast array of other systems. Today's news is the latest update release for KevinMos3's enhanced edition of Double Dragon, but for the Atari 78000 which brings it more in line with the Arcade original.

Atari in the 21st Century

One thing is certain, if you are reading this, you have heard of Atari. The granddaddy of gaming, where it all started many years ago. Fast forward into the 21st century and Atari as we used to know it no longer exists, having been bought out and sold more times than Pac-man has gobbled yellow dots. Now they exist as a publisher, just a name to add a touch of Panache to a game cover. Just because Atari as a company died, it's fan base certainly lived to tell a tale or two. The two main classic consoles 2600 and 7800 are being given a whole new lease of life by "bedroom" programmers all over the world.
