Super Mario Bros looks incredible on the Sega Master System!

Possibly the coolest news for this week and one I really think is going to get those jaws dropping *AGAIN*, is the fact that thanks to a mighty heads up by our good friend @PixelCNinja, we have been told the Sega Master System version of Super Mario Bros by LackofTrack is available for ALL to enjoy! Yes indeed one of the most eagerly awaited games to come to the Sega Master System as announced some time ago as a proof of concept, is here as a near-perfect port of the NES/FC classic

This ambitious project brings the legendary Nintendo Entertainment System classic over to its 8-bit rival's hardware, delivering gameplay that feels virtually identical to the original under normal play. However, this isn't a simple carbon copy. The port leverages the unique strengths of Sega's hardware to introduce an enhanced graphics mode inspired by the pseudo 16-bit visual style of Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES, packing the screen with richer colors, detailed backgrounds, and a fresh coat of paint that revitalizes the classic Mushroom Kingdom.

Beyond the visuals, the release introduces a stunning new audio mode designed specifically to exploit the YM2413 FM synthesizer chip, a feature native to Japanese Master System consoles and a favorite mod for hardware enthusiasts. This mode delivers lush, 16-bit style musical arrangements based on the All-Stars soundtrack, though players will need a compatible console or modded unit to experience it. The massive community effort was made possible by referencing key game disassembles from developers like doppelganger, MrWint, and TakuikaNinja, alongside collaborative coding, graphic design assists, and Einar Saukas's ZX7 compression algorithm to squeeze the expanded assets onto the cartridge.
