Almost There Games is back with another nod to a nostalgic classic! Welcome to Nelumbo, a modern reimplementation that pays tribute to an iconic Amiga racing franchise. For decades, the Lotus trilogy stood as the absolute pinnacle of high-speed arcade racers on the system, spanning from the ground breaking Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, to the fan-favourite Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, and finally Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge. Nelumbo brilliantly fuses all three legendary titles into one rebuilt package, hopefully preserving the distinct character of the original releases while introducing modern refinements for today's hardware.
Nelumbo delivers pure, arcade adrenaline that demands quick reflexes and a heavy right foot. Players will put their foot down to race through rapidly changing scenery—including dense forests, crowded cities, muddy marshes, treacherous mountain roads, and neon-lit night-time highways. Success requires players to choose a campaign, master its roads, and fight to reach first place. Rival drivers aggressively crowd the racing line, unpredictable road surfaces actively fight back as you thread through traffic, survive changing weather, and carry as much speed as you dare over blind crests hiding jumps, sharp bends, and narrow roadside gaps.

Oh my goodness, can't wait to try this out! Lotus 2 was always my favourite Amiga racer :)
ReplyDeleteSame!! Spent many o' good time playing Lotus with school friends
DeleteI'm really looking forward to this, especially with widescreen support.
ReplyDeleteNice
ReplyDeleteBetter sense of speed, well done. Looking forward to the release too.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, loved all the mag fields driving games (super cars 1 & 2 and the 3 Lotus games).
ReplyDeleteReally very cool to see what you've done with this - and all these new developments! I like how you're tinkering with it and playing with these different rendering styles.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if it's possible, but it'd be incredible to see an option in the graphics to have some of the new smoothness 'pixelled' up a little bit, so that it has a slightly chunkier feel about it like the original horizon and sky graphics retained in the background.
I love the frame rate, the draw distance and density options. It'd be a cherry on this special cake if there were a 'chunky' option too!
Please don't take that as a criticism, I'm really enjoying seeing what you're doing with these Amiga oldies (and a good part of the way through your wonderful Ruff n Tumble redux)! Just sharing a thought :)
Keep up the great work!
I'm really enjoying seeing your progression, and the thoughtfulness going into each rendering and update test. It's tricky to balance merging the old and the new, and very cool to see these developments.
ReplyDeleteI love the frame rate updates and the options in the graphics to set draw distance and scenery density - great to be able to personalize the look! Thanks for adding all that.
The icing on the cake - and I'm not sure if it's even possible - would be to see a 'pixellated' option that gave a slightly chunkier pixel look to smoothness of the new road raster, creating a cohesive look with the original style horizon and sky graphics you're using.
Please don't take this as criticism! Very much enjoying your work on these Amiga oldies (and part way through your wonderful Ruff n Tumble redux)! Your reverence for the originals is clear, and I'm enjoying seeing all your projects. Keep up the great work!
Sorry about doubling up the comment - they don't show up right away so I thought there'd been a page error!
