Maxwell's Odyssey - A nod to early 90's platformer classics, teased by Cosmic Void (+DEMO)

Ruff 'n' Tumble - An incredible Amiga game comes over to modern systems

The classic 1994 Amiga action platformer Ruff 'n' Tumble has unofficially arrived on Windows and Linux, bringing the complete and incredible Amiga game to modern gaming systems. Originally developed by Wunderkind and published by Renegade Software, the acclaimed title was celebrated as one of the Amiga's premier platformers due to its rapid pace, amazing graphics, stunning animations, expansive levels, and satisfying run-and-gun gameplay. Lemmings - An all time classic has arrived on the Pico-8 by Buzzard, and it's seriously good!

Well this is incredible news, as if you own a PICO-8, which is a virtual machine and game engine created by Lexaloffle Games. Then you'll be pleased to know that Buzzard has successfully ported Lemmings to the PICO-8. This impressive demake features all 100 levels from the original NES release, while drawing heavy aesthetic inspiration from the beloved Amiga and SNES versions. Players can expect faithful gameplay mechanics, adorable pixel art, and a catchy, nostalgic soundtrack as they guide the green-haired creatures to safety.

Chuckie Egg 3 - Henhouse Harry, star of ZX Spectrum classic Chuckie Egg is back via Langford Productions

Retro gamers rejoice, as Henhouse Harry is officially back in Chuckie Egg 3 by Landford Productions! A brand-new title that ditches the adventure mechanics of Chuckie Egg 2 to return to its high-speed arcade roots of the original. Not only that, but while the game has been highly modernized for PC, you can even play in a Spectrum Mode with authentic Spectrum‑style graphics and beeper‑style sounds. If that doesn't pull you in however, then it also features 10 distinct scenes spanning 30 levels, ranging from classic single-screen arenas to massive 3×3 grids and more!

Utopia Must Fall - A chaotic Arcade shooter that's worth checking out via Steam (Early Access)

If you're looking for a new indie game for your PC(Windows/Mac) with great retro vibes and chaotic blasting Arcade action, then we might have found just the game for you! As if you head on over to Pixeljam's Steam page below, you'll be able to play their latest game of 'Utopia Must Fall'; a super cool looking game in which the creator says "is a vector-flavored base-defending arcade shooter with rapid progression and procedurally generated attack waves". To coincide with this news, we've got some footage and further details while the game is available via Steam early access.

Dragowfall - A nod to 80's Intellivision games by Heracleum for the PC ( Online too! )

A rather unusual bit of news this afternoon, as thanks to a heads up by a good friend of ours, we've been told it might be worth checking out this downloadable and online playable game mash up of Dragowfall. What makes this game worth checking out you ask? Well according to the website, Dragowfall is a mashup of 3 games from the 80's, in the style of Intellivision, all glued together to form a more intense chivalry-themed adventurous experience! To coincide with this news, we've got some gifs from the game, as well as some further information about Shadowfax, Pitfall! and Dragonfire that have been mashed together.

Skald: Against the Black Priory - A dark fantasy game inspired by classic RPG's available now!

In the 80's many of us had the pleasure of playing Ultima IV on the C64, it was arguably one of the best RPG's ever released which featured a top down playing field with lush landscapes, dungeons to explore, characters to traverse with and many enemies to fight. So now as a complete surprise to us, High North Studios AS together with Raw Fury, have announced the release of Skald: Against the Black Priory: A game in which GOG says "is inspired by roleplaying games of yesteryear, combining modern design and compelling storytelling with authentic 8-bit looks and charms."

Mystic Land: Search for Maphaldo - An old school RPG inspired by the likes of Wizardry 7 and Eye Of The Beholder series teased!

I've mentioned many times now, how much I love old skool Dungeon Crawlers. I've even posted about a number of games from my own personal collection such as Eye of the Beholder and my all time favourite Lands of Lore. So why am I going on about this again on Indie Retro News? Well trawling through Twitter, we've come across a rather awesome looking crawler by MegaVision Software called 'Mystic Land: Search for Maphaldo'; A game that the team has said "is an old school RPG inspired by the likes of Wizardry 7 and Eye Of The Beholder series".

The Telwynium - A Sierra inspired adventure trilogy that's worth checking out (Win/Linux/Mac)

Ladies and Gentlemen the late 80's and early 90's adventure graphical style is calling out to us once again. As a trilogy of games has just appeared in our news feeds that looks very much like the classic Kings Quest and Quest for Glory games right out of the DOS era. Welcome to ' The Telwynium: Book One, Book Two and Book Three ' by Powerhoof; a Sierra style series in which you are fleeing the Shadowfell with your childhood friends Tani and Witt, the irritable Uplander Otarr Stronghorn, and a colossal golem of mud and stone, summoned by the Aldor as the Shadowfell attacked (Book One).

Tiny Thor - A stylish Jump'n'Run game featuring pixel art from Henk Nieborg and music by Chris Hülsbeck! [GOG/Steam]

Our good friend Tom has contacted us regarding a lovely looking game called 'Tiny Thor', that is not only available for PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch and Steam OS/Linux, but features true 16-bit pixel art from Henk Nieborg, and the musical talents of the legend that is Chris Hülsbeck! This game which is a Jump'n'Run, goes beyond the usual genre, and combines elements of both action, puzzles and even skills with a unique ability to use your hammer as a powerful throwing weapon.

A Blast From The Past - A modern Galaxian remake that looks pretty decent! (Sega Mega Drive WIP too)

Galaxian has appeared on Indie Retro News many times over the years, especially as it is one particular Arcade classic that homebrew developers love making clones of with special effects and bonus power ups. Well here's a news update that is sure to excite those who love playing this game back in the day, as not only can you play what looks to be a very modernized version of Galaxian via Steam, but Happy Cactus Games Limited is also working on a Sega Mega Drive version too!

BEEP'S ESCAPE - This ZX Spectrum tribute looks super cool on Steam!

As if you head on over to Little Martian Games Steam page below, you'll be able to play their latest game of 'BEEP'S ESCAPE'; a super cool looking game in which the creator says "is a non-too-subtle nod to the ZX Spectrum games of the 1980s, in particularly the Dizzy franchise of action-adventure games".

Quest for Lubok - A constantly updated text adventure entirely written in Basic by Remington Gore!

Something slightly different for today's retro heads up instead of all the eye candy retro games we've featured over the last couple of weeks. As we've just been contacted by Remington Gore via Twitter, that if you head on over to his website below, you can download the latest version of the open source text adventure of Quest for Lubok. A game that is being created by a hobbyist who rediscovered his love of programming, rewriting an old text adventure he wrote in Qbasic 4.5.

Occult Case Files - A Horror adventure inspired by games such as Shadowgate gets a demo

Great news if you loved games such as Deju Vu, Uninvited or even my personal favorite Shadowgate, as we've just been told through our Game Dev : RetroGaming Facebook group, that Teebowah Games has released an early demo of the dark horror themed game of Occult Case Files; A game in which you play as an amateur occult investigator that is investigating a supposed paranormal spot, where people have vanished into thin air and have never been seen again.

Return to Monkey Island - The follow-up to a classic Adventure series shows off LeChuck!

The Secret of Monkey Island developed by Lucasfilm Games (later LucasArts) was originally released in 1990 and created by now industry legends Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman. It was a game that has lived on in the hearts of many retro gamers across the globe and is still played by both the young and old even today. Well if you remember Monkey Island and have been keen to see what the upcoming sequel is like called 'Return to Monkey Island', then as of today Gilbert's Terrible Toybox studio, in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games has teased the first look at the evil pirate LeChuck.

Ex-zodiac - Move over Star Fox it's time for a new fast-paced rail shooter to play! (Windows, macOS, and Linux)

Trawling through the itch io website there's another game that might be worth checking out, and that's the latest early access release of Pixeljam and Ben Hickling's 'Ex-zodiac'; a game which isn't just available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, but from the look of the game it looks like it could be the next best thing for those of you who played the hit game of Star Fox/Star Wing; a game which was released way back in the 90's for the SNES. To coincide with this news, not only is there a new trailer, but you can download the game below.

MorbSweeper - A twisted version of MINESWEEPER playable in your browser

I'm sure many of you have heard of MineSweeper; a puzzle game in which players had to clear the board of numbers without coming across deadly exploding bombs, using help from clues about the number of neighbouring mines in each field. But I bet you haven't heard of Morbsweeper, which is the latest game from Lumpy, qkjosh, branflakes, hi5music and PhillChabbb. Well if you haven't, you'll pleased to know that this isn't just a clone of MineSweeper but this is a twisted version in which you have to suck your way to victory!

FreeCol - Open source Colonization gets a BIG 0.13.0 release

It has been many months since the previous build, the latest open source colonization "FreeCol" 0.13.0 is now available for download. Based on Sid Meier's Colonization (Microprose) in which the player manages the cross-Atlantic expansion of an established nation in the service of the Crown. This is an open source version which is also very similar to Civilization. Starting off with just a few colonists and looking for new lands, will you succeed for a new nation or be wiped out by the natives.

Space Dragons - This in dev PC Shoot 'em up from TeamBlackHatRobot looks super cool! (+Demo)

Other than adventure games and platformers, I've also had a great fondness for shoot 'em ups, from retro games such as R-Type and Project-X to modern inspirations such as the fabulous Super Hydorah. There isn't a Shoot 'em up that I'd turn away from just to pick up a power up and blast a few waves of enemies! So to see a high quality shoot 'em up that's in development by TeamBlackHatRobot called 'Space Dragons' which has inspirations to classics seen at the Arcades or on the Mega Drive, I just had to give it a shout out!
