Mystic Land: Search for Maphaldo - An old school RPG inspired by the likes of Wizardry 7 and Eye Of The Beholder series teased!

I've mentioned many times now, how much I love old skool Dungeon Crawlers. I've even posted about a number of games from my own personal collection such as Eye of the Beholder and my all time favourite Lands of Lore. So why am I going on about this again on Indie Retro News? Well trawling through Twitter, we've come across a rather awesome looking crawler by MegaVision Software called 'Mystic Land: Search for Maphaldo'; A game that the team has said "is an old school RPG inspired by the likes of Wizardry 7 and Eye Of The Beholder series".

Also according to the team behind the game "Mystic Land is an open world retro RPG. A true spiritual successor of Wizardry 7, Eye Of The Beholder and Might and Magic. Old-school dungeon crawling, party creation and turn based movement/combat with a bit of "extra" added. For example : different forest areas don't look the same and aren't using the same graphics, so each area you explore will be unique and special. Furthermore the possibility to add animations to everything - walls, objects, floor, ambient... like the animation of a rat crawling all over the dead Shkra warrior in the dungeon. This opens up lots of possibilities".

And that's we have on the game so far, but for further information make sure to check out the website link, or the twitter page above, we can't wait!

  2. Looks fantastic! I wonder what species the top right character is. Looks like a feline with canine ears. Or a canine with a muzzle that's a bit broad and a nose that's feline? :3 Anyway, this looks fantastic! I love it already! Can't wait for more!

  5. It reminds me the recent "Heralds of the winged exemplar" a turn based rpg from one of the programmers of Wizardry...

    1. As I understand, the Heralds' creator did not work on any of the released Wizardry episodes, but a cancelled sequel. TBH I like the aesthetic of this game much better than that of Heralds. No idea why.

    2. Honestly I get Might and Magic 3/World of Xeen vibes, which I like. Brighter graphics I guess.

Been trying to find information on developing one of these style games myself, and finding zilch. Everyone says go 3D, not 2D like this and the other Wizardry-style games. Google is garbage and hasn't had a relevant result in a decade.

  6. Looks lovely. Reminds me on Grimoire (which has been my deepest dungeon crawler experience to date, tremendous game). Definitely a day 1-purchase for me.

  8. Are we seeing new rise of dungeon crawlers? There seems to be few interesting projects in development at the moment: fallen dungeons, skullstone, dungeons of the amber griffin, the darkness below, chronicles of vaeltaja and couple of others, just forgot the names. Some seem more modern while others look more retro style. Don't know about you, but i'm pretty excited!

    1. The only Dungeon Crawler I was hooked on as a modern variant was Legend of Grimrock 1. Sadly none of the others have really pulled me and kept me playing to finish. I'm still crying out for a Lands of Lore or Eye of the Beholder type :D

    2. I can't say that Grimoire was love on first sight for me two. Took me some time but then it became real. Played it for weeks on end, no other game was interesting to me in this time. It took me - if I remember correctly - almost half a year to finish it. But in all that time there was not a single moment when motivation faded. I felt like an empty shell afterwards, Grimoire acompanied me through these months like a good friend I looked forward to meet again in the evening to continue playing. It's rough around the edges, sure, but it has such a tremendous depth and the atmosphere is so unique I rate it among my favourite RPGs now.

    3. I bought Grimoire as soon as it was released, and yet I've never played it! WOOPS! Looks like I need to now going by what you just said :D

    4. By all means, try it! I advise to use Briarpatch Woods as starting location as it's slightly more forgiveable than the other starting points. I got my ass handed badly at first but with a bit of patience I got into it. I recommend not to be too proud to use help guides. There are some excellent ones on Steam. Especially some puzzles were very difficult (at least for me) and it's helpful to know a bit about how races, abilities and classes work in this game. I'm normally not so much into RPGs with complex rules but here it didn't feel like chore to learn a bit. It made the game even more interesting. And by God, there is so much to do, find, discover and learn in this game. The magic system alone with its good dozen of magic schools and the forbidden, hidden eldritch magic is utterly fascinating... man I have to replay it someday soon.
