Fat Tarzan wasn't the only eye opening Commodore 64 game to be teased this month, as thanks to a heads up by the developer, we've been told that Marcel Sásik is working on a rather incredible looking Commodore 64 game called ' Crystian and the lost crystals '. A game in which you play as Crystian, and must traverse highly detailed underground areas avoiding dangerous enemies, while also collecting coins and looking for a special crystal. To coincide with this tease, the developer has posted the latest dev notes below the video.
And here's the latest from the Facebook post (HERE). "Besides some really major changes under the hood (e.g., a complete overhaul of the game engine for map scrolling and viewport to accommodate enemy rendering and numerous other optimizations), the game now has full audio. This includes music—I’m no musician and this was my first time using Goattracker2, so I apologize for the tune; I did my best :D—and SFX. The title screen, health and energy systems, and Game Over screen are finished, and the HUD is complete as well (lives, energy, magic cubes, and coins (100 coins = +1 life))."
"I’ve added a waypoint system, and enemies are now categorized into different damage tiers (normal, high damage like rocks or deep water, and instant death from lava). There are now two types of magic cubes (blue and yellow) that only open gates of the matching color. I’ve also expanded the gates to include left and right versions (gates can only be opened from one direction). And I’m sure there are plenty of other changes I can’t even recall at the moment. Next up is level design (3 levels, maybe more, depending on how good a job Exomizer does) and enemy scripting (not looking forward to that). And... as you can see, the project finally has a title, and for a while now, it’s been a real struggle to squeeze everything into 64KB 😉"
"I don't know the total number of levels (maps) yet. It depends on how much the exomizer can compress the data. I hope at least 3 levels. The map will be 124x97 characters in each level, which is 3 screens wide and 4 high. The point is to find a crystal in a maze. yes, the game is called "Crystian and the lost crystals". I also have a story in my head about what happened and why Crystian is looking for his crystals. Finally, thank you to all the commenters and likers for your support, I didn't believe I could do it myself. I haven't had this much fun (sometimes "fun") in a long time."
And that's all we know so far, so watch this space!

Awesome stuff!
ReplyDeleteThis is incredibly cool and very beautifully styled. Exceptional work!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBtw. the music is top peer. No idea what the author is trying to tell ("I’m no musician and this was my first time using Goattracker2, so I apologize for the tune"). Wait, what? Why? The echo, the mood, the fact that the music is still running on 2 tracks only… Incredible!
