Just as I was about to call it a day, here comes 'OpenSWOS', a ground-up rewrite of the legendary football game Sensible World of Soccer 96/97. By reconstructing the original source code entirely in the C programming language, the developer(s) have delivered a native AGA version that finally achieves what the 1996 original couldn't: a gorgeous, true 256-colour palette across the pitch and backgrounds. Available completely for free, OpenSWOS brings back the entire definitive football experience for retro gaming fans, including friendlies, full seasons, custom tournaments, and the iconic 20-year career mode. Moving the architecture to C not only drastically improves how the game looks today, but also opens the door for future feature additions!
Getting back to it, this is a straightforward process for anyone with a classic setup, requiring an AGA-capable Amiga like an A1200 or A4000 running a 68020 processor or better, though modern emulators like WinUAE and FS-UAE are also fully supported. A stock A1200 handles gameplay rather well, pushing matches to a smooth 42-50 frames per second. To build the game, players simply use a companion setup tool on a modern PC or Mac to compile data from their own legally owned copies—specifically requiring two original SWOS 96/97 .adf disk images alongside the PC retail version found on GOG—before transferring the final SWOS drawer over to launch directly from the Amiga Workbench. The installation even plays nice with the modern community, allowing users who own SWOS 2020 to seamlessly port over its custom pitches for the ultimate retro-football crossover.
- Q: The original game booted an aga version that was also on the disk, why is this needed?
- A: The native AGA version is not 256 colors. Now the game re-written in C it opens it up to more features.

PC version had funny videos on career mode. These would be nice on upgraded Amiga port
ReplyDeleteExcuse me, but what "gorgeous palette?" It's light green and dark green. SWOS is not exactly an RPG / point & click / some other genre that would actually require such a treatment.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The original was perfect - and ran at a smoother frame rate. Absolutely no need for more colours. The beauty of the design is in its clarity and simplicity.
