What a brilliant month this has been, with an influx of great games ranging from Street Fighter 2 on the ZX Spectrum called Sweet Fightin', to the Amiga AGA port discovery and release of Terra Cresta. Well, here we are with another banger! As I've only just been informed that a far better version of Sega's Congo Bongo has appeared on the MSX by Mastropiero. As the website says "The arcade classic finally comes home to the MSX as it was meant to be played."
Original
Congo Bongo: The Isometric Edition
Here's the latest. "For years, MSX fans had to settle for a lackluster cassette version of Congo Bongo that lacked the visual depth and perspective of the original Sega masterpiece. This new port—built upon the excellent Colecovision version— restores the iconic isometric perspective and challenging gameplay that made the arcade original a legend. Avoid the coconuts, dodge the rhinos, and show that mischievous ape who’s boss in a port that prioritizes quality, compatibility, and arcade authenticity."
Features
- True Isometric View: Unlike previous MSX versions, this port features the genuine "Zaxxon-style" perspective.
- Arcade Aesthetics: All in-game text now uses the original arcade font for that 1983 feel.
- Enhanced Presentation: A brand-new, animated main title screen and polished selection menus have been added.
- Multiplayer: Support for 1 or 2 players (alternating).
- Flexible Controls: Full support for cursor keys and Joysticks (Port 1 & 2).

Reminds me of the Ti99/4a version I had back in the day. Especially the color palette. Not a great choice of ports as the arcade game was more advanced than consoles were capable of. The later c64 version that came out was one of the better looking versions.
ReplyDeleteI loved Congo Bongo in the arcades (yes, I played the original back in 1983). All of the ports are flawed (I was heart broken by the terrible VIC-20 version I received the holiday season it was released). This one doesn't look to capture of the charm of the original, it's mostly a port of the ColecoVision version. As the previous comment pointed out, the disk-based C64 version did look fantastic—but the sprite work was terrible. I've recently taken a closer look at the arcade's sprites and it's impressive what they created with the hardware at that time.
