Galaga - An Arcade classic as a new Commodore Amiga conversion by JOTD and team! [UPDATE]

Remember when we said that a possible 1:1 Arcade conversion of Galaga was coming to the Commodore Amiga thanks to the hard work of JOTD and team? Well if you've been following all of our previous articles on Indie Retro News, then you'll be pleased to know that as of today you can download the final version which is feature complete! A game that was originally developed and published by Namco Japan and by Midway in North America in 1981.

As we said before, Galaga puts you in control of a mighty spaceship that must destroy waves of enemy formations that are out to destroy or capture you! As for this latest release, rest assured that if you have a Commodore Amiga and have played any of JOTD's previous Arcade conversions such as Phoenix, Tetris, or even our personal favourite Donkey Kong, then you'll love this new conversion that is available right now!

UPDATE :

While the final version of this great Arcade conversion was released way back in 2024, you'll be pleased to know that an update has been made available by JOTD that has more optimizations and 25 fps on a A500 as 50 fps (crawled).

    1. With all due respect to the late Mr. Vidgal, Deluxe Galaga is a pretty flawed game. Enemies are kind of dumb, instead of graceful and wily like they are in classic Galaga. They also soak up a crapton of damage. Also, the game is profoundly stingy with its currency. At the end of every level, you have enough money for a wimpy double shot and a gumball for dessert.

  4. Galaga had 3 z80s plus custom chips, for an earlier 80s game it was a beast. I am glad it got a professional conversion.

    1. One of those Z80s was for sound, but still 2 Z80s were dedicated to logic & sprite update. Hardware is really powerful for a 1981 game.

    2. I am loving the perfect arcade conversions you are doing. Galaga was state of the art for its time. I wanted to ask something about another game, Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja. Robocop runs on the same arcade board, would it make things easier to port over if you decided to do that game. Thanks.

    3. Same hardware doesn't mean that it's easy to do. The games I create do not emulate the hardware fully if they can avoid it. That said, Bad Dudes extra layer was a big issue when used for trucks/trains. In Robocop it's only used for parallax so it can be done with repeated sprite strips, as they're completely behind the other layers. But it's still a massive undertaking.

  9. Hmmm, the linked Youtube video is missing some lines at the top, namely 70+ % of "High Score" and "1UP" - hopefully the game itself does not.
