Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo is coming to the Commodore 64/128 by RetroGL!

With the amount of news stories throughout the last week and the weekend just gone, you'd think we'd take a break, but not so! As waking up this morning, and waiting for the Caffeine to kick in, I was surprised to learn that RetroGL is aiming on bringing Super Street Fighter II Turbo over to the Commodore 64 using his RetroFighter engine. An engine that was also used in the more recent homebrew C64 hit of SNK vs CAPCOM. To coincide with this news, Saberman has provided a new video of the demo, but lets just hope that further demos are not magazine exclusives and can be enjoyed by all.

Here's the latest by the creator "In this video you can find some updates on the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo game I'm creating for C64/C128 platforms using my RetroFighter engine. This adaptation of SSF2T for CBM platforms is based on the GameBoy Advance version called SSF2T Revival, but obviously my version will have something different. The game is planned to be executed on a 1Mbyte EasyFlash or Kung Fu Flash cartridge.

This new demo includes the following:

  • enhanced appearance for all fighters (even if something has to be enhanced yet)
  • endings for each fighter
  • almost all fighting dynamics implemented (for example, throw escapes)
  • The next demo will have 2 bonus rounds and new backdrops and musics during the game.

    1. With the tech limitations of the C64 here, I think this is an amazing looking game! You can recognise all the characters immediately and you instantly know it's SF2!

Re. the above comment - very hard to see how the graphics could be 'improved', they look to me like they're pushing the machine to its limits and I'm really impressed! I feel your expectations may just be a little high here for 64kb!

      Great work. Cool to see.

    2. aye, the size and color per sprite limits are used as good as they can be here. Each character is recognisable without having to go with super deformed. Ok some sprites might look a bit messy but overall this is C64 doing the best it can and if you want any better then you'd probably not be wanting to play SF2 on a C64 anyway. Absolutely plenty of other options for a more arcade accurate version, including many ways to play the actual arcade game itself. :)

  8. No expert on this, but would high-res sprites not look better (as in the US version of Street Fighter) or Target Renegade, Renegade 3, etc. This sprites are so clear and crisp. I am guessing it is just some limitation with movements?

    1. It's more like a limitation with the sheer number of sprites.
