Alleyway ZX - Block-breaking 1989 handheld game comes over to the ZX Spectrum

Kirby2000 has brought a classic handheld block-breaker over to the ZX Spectrum 48k and 128k, a newly released unofficial fan-made conversion that stays faithful to the original 1989 release. The game challenges players to command a paddle, deflect a bouncing ball, and obliterate rows of descending blocks to progress. Spanning a total of 32 stages—comprising 24 standard levels alongside 8 timed bonus rounds—the action keeps players on their toes with a variety of normal, scrolling, and advancing block walls that ramp up the difficulty before concluding with a triumphant final.

According to the creator this fan-made conversion delivers smooth 50 Hz gameplay paired with flicker-free sprites, an authentic original loading screen and faithful ball physics and stage layouts. The audio experience scales across models as well, serving up robust AY music and sound effects on 128K systems while utilizing classic beeper music and effects on the 48K version. For control, it includes full accessibility by supporting keyboard play alongside Kempston and Sinclair joysticks.
