The Indie Retro News C64 Game Awards 2020 Winners Announced

Here we are again, and what an excellent year it was for C64 game development at least!  The quality of titles - both physical and digital keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to see what 2021 brings us - but with the likes of Eye of the Beholder C64 imminent, A Pig's Quest, Wild Wood, and perhaps Doc Cosmos 2... We have a lot to look forward to this year as well.

C64 Game Awards 2020 Winners

Game of the year:  MW Ultra.

Fantastic story, breath taking action, combine with brilliant gameplay, graphics and sound. This game has everything.  This is the best Metal Warrior game in the series and I really hope the War Metal Band Cyber Priest returns for an encore!

Budget Game of the year: Zeta Wing.

Sarah Jane Avory returned triumphantly with another beutifully crafted vertical shmup.  This one has better graphics, a new power up system and many more enemy types and levels than Neutron - and will hopefully get a phyisical release of its own this year.  In the meantime it's available now from itch.io and you shouldn't miss it!

Genius of the year award: Steve Day for Fix it Felix Jr.

For the inspiration for this excellent port of an arcade game that never was... Steve Day deserves all the credit.  While Antonio Savona did an excellent job bringing the art to life - Steve's graphics, ideas and dedication to the C64 earn him the Genius of the year award this year!

And that's it for another year! Congratulations to all the winners and nominees.  And a special shout out to Sarah Jane Avory for working tirelessly over Christmas to bring us the excellent Soul Force!.  Whilst it arrived slightly too late to be nominated in the awards this year... it will almost certainly be guaranteed a nomination for the 2021 awards... The benchmark for GOTY 2021 has been set!

You can find all of the game of the year awards nominees in our previous article here.
