Zippy Race is being ported over to the Amiga 500 by Modern Vintage Gamer

Shock!! This isn't a JOTD Arcade to Amiga port! As I've found out from Walter Mamo that Modern Vintage Gamer is working on an Arcade to Amiga port of the top down racing game called 'Zippy Race', also known as MotoRace USA in the states. A game in which the player controls a racer who must travel on a motorcycle from Los Angeles to New York City. To coincide with this news, MVG has provided a long video showing how the game came to be and the current progress.

Here's the latest in regards to the video above. "Ever wanted to code a game from scratch that runs on an old retro computer hardware from 1985 ? Challenge Accepted - This is my Work in Progress port of Zippy Race that runs on a standard Commodore Amiga A500 with the Original Chip Set (OCS) and just 512k/512k. In this episode I walk through how the port came to be and how I solved various challenges with the development of the game. I hope you enjoy!"

A Few Notes:

  • I Plan to  finish and release this sometime in 2026. No eta yet  - when its done. It will be free and open sourced but might do a limited physical print run. We will see.
  • The Amiga technical information about theBblitter, Sprites, Scrolling etc is my understanding to the best of my knowledge. I'm not an expert and im still learning this stuff so if i got something wrong please let me know
  • Have a fantastic week!

  3. This is fantastic! MVG understood the assignment properly - a port of an 80s arcade game is supposed to run on an un-expanded Amiga 500, NOT a god-tier Vampire-accelerated AGA monster!

    1. A port of an 80s arcade with year < 1984 is supposed to run on unexpanded A500. Some 1989 games are already too much even for the A1200. I like the spirit of this: don't aim too high, but make it good. Nice choice for a port.

  7. This is great, more quality arcade ports for Amiga which give 50/60 FPS. We got just crappy arcade conversions for Amiga in the 80's, or cheap Atari ST conversions to Amiga. Bombjack, Outrun, Rolling Thunder, and Robocop, etc. were all disasters, just to name a few. Fortunately, now we have new and better versions of at least Bomb Jack and Outrun thanks to good Amiga developers.
