Pool of Radiance - SSI's legendary RPG comes to the Atari ST (AI) and expanded Sega Mega Drive

The Advanced Dungeons & Dragons legendary RPG Pool of Radiance has arrived on the Atari ST, fulfilling a decades-old promise originally made by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI). The title famously vanished from release schedules after its initial announcement long ago. However, according to the website the developer cb-fgc with the help of AI recently revived the project by modifying the system's official release of the sequel, Curse of the Azure Bonds. Since SSI's iconic Gold Box engine uses a highly modular design, modifying the sequel's code allowed the creator to retroactively port the missing original adventure to the Atari ST.

Modern AI tools heavily accelerated the development of this game. The developer utilized artificial intelligence to convert PC DAX data files into native ST GLB and TLB containers, building upon script and map files converted years prior. The technology also automated tedious coding tasks, including fixing jump tables, restoring missing labels, adjusting the user interface, and injecting unique code for the outside map and ending sequences. The project is currently public as a beta version. While major features like map travel have been tested, players should still expect potential bugs and system crashes.

  • You need an Atari ST or an emulator to play this game (min. 1 MB of RAM).This game also runs on Falcon030/CT60 and is compatible with NetUSB and the USB mouse driver.

Pool of Radiance has also made its debut on the Sega Mega Drive via DoubleDragon.org, marking the first time this cult-classic computer RPG can be played entirely with a joypad and without a keyboard. Because the massive title demands roughly 2 MB of memory—far exceeding the stock Sega Mega Drive—the release utilizes a unique hardware workaround. The game borrows memory directly from the flash cart itself via a specialized "ROM write" mode. As a result, the physical media release is built explicitly for the Terraonion MegaSD, which allows the software to dynamically write to its own cartridge space during gameplay.

This adaptation comes packed with features for the expanded Mega Drive, including a custom color grade, new FM music voices, and a stylish new intro sequence. Physical cartridge collectors can access the complete Adventurer's Journal directly on the hardware, available in both text-only formats and high-quality scans of the original documents. Crucially, the developer has also fixed 38 legacy bugs that plagued the original computer versions and their subsequent ports for decades. Alongside these long-awaited stability fixes, this Sega Mega Drive version introduces heavily requested character improvements and enhancements!
