Games I remember, with a remake - Mega Lo Mania

Another game I remember so well, was Mega Lo Mania, which was an RTS developed by Sensible Software. It was released for the Amiga in 1991, and ported to many other platforms including the Atari ST, Mega Drive/Genesis, Super NES, DOS, and the Sharp X68000. The object of Mega Lo Mania was to conquer 28 islands, divided into nine Epochs that span the history of mankind.

At the start of the game you, the player, can take on the role of one of four Gods: Scarlet (Red), Oberon (Yellow), Caesar (Green) or Madcap (Blue).  It's here where you either lead your people to complete domination, or to be wiped out by the other gods competing against you in each Epoch.  Your little people are lead by instruction, they can be builders, researchers, mine for elements or form a great army to take over another piece of land. Mega Lo Mania also had some very unusual in game voices, which would sound great in any Carry On film, such as " The design is ready ".

The Islands are divided into grid sectors. Islands in this game can have anywhere between two and sixteen sectors. Some islands are small enough to only allow two different Gods to compete against each other, but the biggest islands can turn against you very quickly. If the elements are not so good or you are surrounded on the go, which happens a lot, it's almost certain defeat.

Specific elements are needed for specific items, especially in the later stages when nukes and jet planes have been researched. You may also need jet planes/biplanes to visit other islands that are not connected. This is when further building research comes into play, such as the building of mines and factories. Also note that each building has defence slots, whereby at the start it maybe a bowman or rock thrower but later stages riflemen.

The game for it's time was so good and even today, it's hard to beat in the fun factor, for such a small title. The developers created a classic and even though I prefer the Amiga version, the Dos version was also decent enough. But lets move on, as it's remake time and thanks to the heads up of awesome.commodore.me we have Gigalomania to play today!

Gigalomania is an open source 2D Real Time Strategy god game, available for all popular desktop and mobile platforms, on PCs, tablets and phones. The game play consists of researching and developing new technology with which to conquer your enemies, from rocks and sticks to nuclear weapons and spaceships. You can advance through ten different ages, from the stone age to the future.
There are 28 different maps to play through. In my opinion I prefer the original, as it looks as if the open source still needs work, but that's what makes open source so good, it can be constantly developed over time! Gigalomania is available for: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, AROS, Nokia Symbian, Maemo, Meego, and Android.
