Donkey Kong for the Commodore Plus/4 looks fantastic!

If you've been living in a cave or just too young, you probably wouldn't remember one of the greatest retro games of all time, the 1981 Nintendo game ' Donkey Kong '. A game in which you played as Mario, that must avoid rolling barrels, sometimes with a hammer in hand, to save a damsel in distress from a giant ape called Donkey Kong. If however you do remember the game or just want to experience it on your Commodore Plus/4. Then make sure to check out this latest release by Csabo, TCFS and Unreal.

Announced via the Plus/4 website.... With the Arok Party 2025 over, the Plus/4 scene was lucky to receive a massive bounty of releases. One of those releases was none other than Donkey Kong, which has arrived on the Commodore Plus/4. A classic platformer originally released in 1981. The player controls Jumpman aka Mario as he runs and jumps on platforms and climbs ladders to ascend a construction site and rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong. Title screen by Veto, converted by Unreal. Cracktro graphics and TCFS logo by Chronos".

  1. Is'nt it the Donkey Kong + (X2016 Version) for the C64 that was ported to C Plus/4 (although Mario seems to have a more prominent nose ). i guess the original Donkey Kong + (X2016 Version) Devs must have share the their sources unless they are already involved (Veto titlesscreen is shared in both ,isnt it?)

    1. Yes it is based on the X2016 version but since it uses soft sprites some graphics had to be changed, especially to avoid/minimize attribute clash. Also there are no flaming barrels and there are less enemies to offset the overhead of the soft sprite engine. Other differences are the always two pixel X movement and as a result a different jump arc for the player and the player spawns differently and probably a few others.
Since the 6510 and 7501/8501 are binary compatible, porting was probably easier and no source sharing was needed.

    2. The title graphics, in-game graphics, and the character set are largely based on my redesign from 2016. The logo and Mario sprite are new, and I also get the impression that Unreal had to rework some objects beyond the colors and resolution.

Which brings me to the point: It was a really nice surprise for me when Unreal contacted me today and told me about this release. I really appreciate it, especially because the graphics look really nice on the Plus/4.

  6. The look and sound are phenomenal, but this version plays super weird! Maybe it's the emulator I'm running it on (YAPE), but the perceived input lag is kind of insane. It could be a purely emulator issue, or it could be due to increased amount of inertia the character has now, so it takes a while to get going and to stop. Also, the jump height feels much lower, probably due to increase in the slope steepness, so barrels are far more difficult to clear.

    1. The "input lag" is not a bug, it is caused by the new movement mechanics. The player is accelerating on move and when you need to turn back immediately, it slows down first and then start accelerating to the opposite direction. It is an intentional design issue and not any emulation or hardware lag.

  7. Great job as always. It doesn't work on my Joco's SD, the first version, the one without support for .D64 files. After the "keep disk in drive" screen, nothing happens.
