Welcome to PETSCII Dungeons & Droids, a tactical roguelike deck-builder that has been released for the C64 by Ko-Ko. Strikingly presented in full text-based character graphics and vibrant animations, the game plunges players into the depths of a dark, labyrinthine dungeon overrun by broken-down machinery. Survival requires navigating tense card battles and outsmarting hostile robots using a unique system that pairs a deck of cards with unpredictable, sentient dice. As players defeat malfunctioning droids, they can harvest special abilities known as "Widgets" to upgrade their own gear, though they must constantly gamble against the fickle nature of their own dice rolls.
The game eliminates complex keyboard controls by operating entirely through a single joystick plugged into Port 2. Despite these streamlined controls, the game offers immense tactical depth, featuring 12 base mechanical enemies that can fuse into mutated mini-bosses, creating up to 220 distinct robotic encounters. Strategists can steal and chain together 12 different functional Widgets, such as "Spark" or "Reboot," to build unstoppable combat synergies. To combat the inevitable bad luck of the dice, players can deploy powerful, exclusive trick cards like "Roll Again" to manipulate the odds and turn a disastrous turn into a triumphant escape from the dungeon.
