Horned Goat Productions has just released the first version of Callback64: Operation Internot, a new Commodore 64 title that tackles modern internet addiction with retro charm. Set in the current year of 2026, the game plunges players into a dystopian world where a central algorithm completely controls humanity, turning citizens into mind-numbing "doomscrollers" glued to their screens (a bit like now :p). The digital tyranny faces an unexpected threat when Commodore launches the Callback 8020—a disgustingly overpriced flip phone stripped of algorithms, feeds, and ads, featuring only basic call and text functions powered by classic SID chip ringtones.
As the protagonist, your mission is to load up a satchel with these liberating flip phones and hit the streets to rescue humanity from its blue-light hypnosis. However, the panicked algorithm has weaponized the "Order of the Breadbin," a brainwashed militia of loyalists who patrol pavements and rooftops, hurling actual Commodore 64 computers at anyone carrying the new device. To succeed, you must navigate these hostile traps, dodge flying hardware, and counter the algorithm's rage-baiting tactics by winning over the trapped citizens using pure kindness and a retro handset.
What you need to play :
- Machine Commodore 64, or an Ultimate 64 / C64 Ultimate
- RAM Expansion Unit Required. Any REU — a stock 1700 is plenty
- Controls Joystick in port 2
- Video PAL native; NTSC supported (The REU is not optional and not decoration. The game refuses to start without one and says so on the title screen. It uses 41,296 bytes and never leaves the first 64 KB bank, so present and big enough are the same test — if a machine has an REU at all, it can run this).
- 6502 assembly with further details found on the website
