Alone in the Dark (Macintosh version) is being ported over to the Amiga via Vesuri

Vesiru is aiming to bring the famous survival horror experience Alone in the Dark to the Commodore Amiga. Rather than rebuilding the game entirely from scratch, this unofficial port operates as a clever compatibility layer that directly executes the 68k code from the 1994 Apple Macintosh version. It dynamically translates the original Mac system services—including memory allocation, event handling, file paths, and QuickDraw graphics—into Amiga-friendly equivalents. As a result, the visuals are processed into native AGA bitplanes while the audio utilizes the Amiga's Paula sound chip, and a WHDLoad installer is already available via EAB's Retroplay Whdload Pack.

The release introduces Amiga users to a franchise widely heralded for establishing the survival horror genre alongside titles like Sweet Home. Originally crafted by Infogrames, the pioneering 1992 adventure follows investigator Edward Carnby as he explores an ominous, undead-infested haunted house inspired by the eerie lore of H. P. Lovecraft. The series went on to spawn seven entries that expanded into themes of voodoo, the Wild West, and H. R. Giger-inspired aesthetics, eventually crossing over into comic books and live-action films.

Requirements and installation

  • AGA Amiga, 68020 or better; 68040 or better strongly recommended.
  • 2 MB Chip RAM and 8 MB Fast RAM; more Fast RAM permits more PRELOAD caching.
  • WHDLoad 17+, Installer 43+, and a supported Kickstart 3.1 image with its RTB.
  • 8 MB destination space and 24 MB temporary disk space.
  • For direct AmigaOS launch on 68040/68060: run SetPatch with the matching CPU support library installed and both instruction and data caches enabled. The executable preserves the OS cache policy; WHDLoad manages its own policy.

[UPDATE] In regards to AI, mikkohoo sent us this in comments "Vesuri uses Claude AI to assist with his porting work; this is openly disclosed on his Github where he hosts the various ports such as Vette!, Slicks 'n' Slide and RAY Pokeri. However, looking at his project files soon reveals that he also does this with a level of expertise few are capable of."

  2. It would be naive to think no AI involved in such an undertaking, and in this case art and assets already exist, so it should be no problem ?
People should understand there is no reason to not use AI for coding tasks where it would take required amount of work from 6 months to maybe 2 weeks ? Nobody would invest that time for these projects, and working with AI is fun.
