Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world. It was just a shame that this amazing adventure with world renown was never officially ported over to the Amiga, unless of course you downloaded the unofficial Amiga AGA version linked (HERE). But this news release isn't about those versions, as I've been informed by Amiga France, that Day of the Tentacle is being natively ported over to the Amiga as both a 32-colour and 256-colour version with the help of AI by Darasco.
The release caters to multiple Amiga setups by offering both 32-colour and 256-colour versions, complete with Roland MT-32 sound support. For standard hardware owners, the 32-colour edition runs on a modest 68000 processor with 512KB of Chip RAM and 4MB of Fast RAM. Meanwhile, the more demanding 256-colour version is built for stock Amiga 1200 machines, though players are tracking better performance by booting without a startup-sequence or adding extra Fast RAM to handle the heavy workload. A standalone CD32 console version is also available in full 256-colour glory, though it skips the MT-32 audio support to run seamlessly on stock console hardware.
Considering this was AI assisted however, early feedback from the Amiga community via the EAB forums has been rather positive too, with some players noting that both the OCS and AGA versions run incredibly well when paired with Fast RAM. In particular, the 32-colour version, with one commenting that the visual quality is so unbelievable it easily tricks the eye into thinking it is displaying far more depth.

I am not an A.I. fan, I will however give this a try.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my alltime favorite games and I hope that this was done with respect to the original.
That's fair! :) So far it's doing rather well, just hoping someone does a video soon
DeleteThere's an A.I. fan, and then - there's an A.I. fan. If everything is intact from the original - why not giving it a whirl? I certainly will.
DeleteSo far I am impressed, although it could use some pollish syncing audio and video in the cutscenes. To be fair there were some issueses with that on my old 486 too back in the day.
DeleteHopefuly one day we will get 'The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Three - Malcolm's Revenge' on the Amiga too.
I dreamt of this playing on my Amiga in all of the CRT glory... Who knew.
ReplyDeleteI hope the next one will be Discworld!
ReplyDeletethis one was always missing on amiga... time to play it at last
ReplyDeleteDay of the Tentacle AGA was already released long time ago on the Amiga
