RGCD C64 16KB Cartridge Game Dev Compo launching this Saturday!

We have featured many awesome C64 games this year, but if you're looking to create one yourself then look no further than this fabulous upcoming compo. As RGCD (#rgcdc64compo19) will be launching the C64 16KB Cartridge Game Development Competition as from this Saturday at 12:00 AM! Following on from the success of all of their previous competitions, the competition creators are hoping for a fantastic 2018/19 full of incredible games all working in 16KB cartridge ROM format.

The Rules

So you can get started, the basic rules are laid out below:
  • The competition deadline is 00:00 GMT on the 1st july 2019 (midnight on the 30th of june) - this gives you over 6 months of development time.
  • There will be no competition unless a minimum of six entries are submitted by the deadline.
  •  All submitted games must be in working 16KB cartridge ROM (.CRT or .BIN) format. Help is available to test ROM files on real hardware. Compression is allowed (and encouraged) but the final file size must not exceed 16KB!
  • The games submitted must be your own work, and not sold commercially or released previously (outside of this competition).
  • PAL must be supported, with additional NTSC support optional (but encouraged). If possible, please consider GS compatibility (no keyboard requirement).
  • The maximum number of single entries from a person or group is set at three. If more entries are made, the applicant has the opportunity to replace a previous entry with a new one.
  • Applicants that submit a valid entry (see above) will receive one physical cartridge copy of their game for free. This is one free cartridge per submission, not one per team member (although more can be purchased at cost price)!
  • The applicant owns their work, all rights remnain with the developer/team!
  • There will be a panel of judges (announced in full over the coming weeks), and entries will be scored on a point distribution basis across several criteria. The decision of the panel is final.
  • Members of the judging panel *can* enter games themselves, but cannot self-vote (award points to their own release).

We've had many great games during the previous C64 16KB Cartridge Game Dev Compos such as Vortex Crystals, Aviator Arcade, Honey Bee and Tiger Claw. But what makes these competitions rather special, is the fact that many of the great games featured actually become fully fledged products down the line much to the delight of the community. Games such as Aviator Arcade becoming Aviator Arcade II, and even Tiger Claw which saw a feature packed release on the Amiga! So watch this space guys and girls as if the last compo is anything to go by this one is going to be stonkingly good!
