Star Wars fans unite! BSzili releases an unofficial Amiga port of Dark Forces (High end Amiga required?)

It feels like it was only just yesterday that we announced through Indie Retro News that BSzili had unofficially released not just the full version of the classic ID Software game of 'Wolfenstein 3D' and 'Spear of Destiny', but also other games such as Exhumed, and Powerslave. Well here we are with another BSzili announcement, as he has told us that he has made available the Amiga port of the Star Wars first person shooter game of Dark Forces. "A game developed and published by LucasArts originally released in 1995 for MS-DOS and Macintosh, set in the fictional Star Wars expanded universe set shortly before the original Star Wars film, to a year after the film's events" -GOG.

In regards to the Amiga version, here is what BSzili says through the EAB Forums "I started working on a native port of Dark Forces based on The Force Engine. There is already a 68k Mac version of DF, but the only video I found of it running on non-FPGA Amiga hardware is this [Youtube]. I'm sure it can be set up to run better, I'm just leaving it here for comparison. For the Amiga port I had to strip away most of TFE's new features, but it inherited the input system and some technical changes that make it more friendly to multitasking OSes. Since the DOS Configuration window is gone, it's missing some kind of Preferences editor to customize the controls and change various settings. If you have no idea what to do for the Amiga Tool Jam, here's one for you".

Requirements:

  • - 68040 or 68060 with an FPU
  • - Kickstart 3.0
  • - AGA chipset or RTG
  • - 8 MB Fast RAM (+4MB for MIDI)
  • - 70 MB disk space
  • - AHI 4.18+

Anyway, here are the Amiga executables:

"As usual, once I'm done I'll clean up the source code, and make a package for Aminet. That reminds me, I still have to do this for Death Rally, but I digress".

  2. This is insane! Didn’t expect to see this happen. This was my favorite FPS until it’s sequel came out and nothing ever topped it’s sequel. Even the cutscenes look smooth.
