Tetris Recoded - This latest version of Tetris by RetroBytes looks super cool!

It's time to move away from the Platform genre and look towards classic Puzzle games for our retro fun, as if you loved the 1984 game of Tetris, you'll be pleased to know that as of today, you can download the very latest Tetris game of 'Tetris Recoded' by RetroBytes. A recoded version which came first at the Mixed Game Competition at LuheCon³! To coincide with this news, we have some footage of the game which gives us a glimpse at the improved graphics, playability, and different music compared to the original 1988 C64 game by Mirrorsoft.

One of the most popular games of all time was a tile-matching, block rotating puzzle video game first released in 1984 which became a huge hit on the Gameboy in 1989.  It just had to be the classic 'Tetris'; a game that caused many people to spend hours playing to the point of addiction. Although we've had numerous clones over the years some of them good and some of them rather bad, today's Tetris Recoded is another version of Tetris that's equally enjoyable for the C64 and well worth a play.

  1. The original C64 version is horrible, this is SO much better. The tetrominoes actually travel down the screen when you place them instead of instantly appearing!

    1. What about the amazing soundtrack though? it really should be in here.

  2. It's a pity that the original soundtrack was not included as an option, since that was the only good thing about the C64 version that made it special. They claim this was due to its interference with timing, but honestly, they should have put in the effort to solve this problem.

  3. 'Improved music' I think not.

  4. Ugh. Why bother using Mirrorsoft's graphics backdrop if you are going to rework the entire game including controls, how pieces move, replace the marvellous music by Wally Beben with generic Gameboy/NES/Russian music? You could as well have started off fresh to make yet another Tetris clone.

Problem is that the original C64 music from Wally Beben was SO MUCH good, that replacing it (and keeping the graphics overlay) does not make any sense to me. BTW that original tune is 27 minutes long before looping!

  6. It's a bit slow. Dropout is a much slicker modern C64 Tetris!

  7. Whaaat? No option for the original tune? It was one of the greatest SID tunes in the C64 history! It's a shame as all the other modifications improve the game a lot.

  8. Nice version, plays well. Like the tune options.

  9. So many complaints about the sound on YouTube. I actually like the NES RUSSIAN THEME. Let's remember why Tetris is great- the playability. We should be thankful these kind enthusiastic people are supporting the c64. If you don't like Tetris on the 64, there are other puzzle homebrews available including Pillars (Columns) Oyup ( Puyo) and Vegetables ( Jewel quest colour matching ). Let's not be ungrateful.

  10. Many thanks for the numerous comments. This release was created within 6 weeks because it had to be ready for the LuheCon party. Due to the many comments regarding the great original soundtrack by Wally Beben, we have now checked again whether an ingame use is possible. Due to the digis used in the music track, which take up about 80% of the available raster time, it is unfortunately not possible to listen to this great tune while playing the game. We are very sorry about that! We hope you enjoy it anyway.

    1. Many thanks for looking into it! What about if someone were to rework the track to not contain digis? Or perhaps another characteristically-SID track, in the meantime?

    3. Amazing work! Thank you! Will it be possible to make a version with the original music for emulators? Surely they will be enough CPU power for that. The original music will make it the perfect Tetris game

  11. This whole release has so much improvements in it, I think it's absolutely a better Tetris than the original Mirrorsoft release. And yes, playing samples the way Wally Beben did back then is CPU consuming, so that's probably why the rest of the game back then wasn't too good. No, it wasn't. This one is, though. Great release!

  12. The solution is obvious. Play this new and greatly improved version of Tetris for the C64 and turn off the music (NO MUSIC option). Then load the original C64 Tetris on your 6581 SID-bearing C64/C128 and listen to the music from there. Or you could just play the music file/CDR/tape of the original soundtrack while you play.
