JOTD's Bad Dudes vs DragonNinja port for the Amiga gets an AGA update tease

An IndieRetroNews reader has recently informed us in our comments feed, that JOTD has shown off a new gameplay video from the eagerly awaited Bad Dudes vs DragonNinja Arcade conversion for the Commodore Amiga (AGA). A game that when it was originally released by Data East/Imagine in 1989, was regarded by some on the Lemon Amiga forums as an absolute dreck with horrible graphics and terrible backgrounds! Thankfully with JOTD behind this conversion, it's sure to be another hit in the Amiga scene.

New Version Tease

UPDATE:

If you've been waiting for more news on this work in progress Arcade to Amiga port of Bad Dudes vs DragonNinja. Then we have just found out through JOTD's video channel, while an old version is still available to download below. He is working on a new version of the game for you to try in the near future. A new build in which he states, "A few breakthroughs in terms of coding, memory management of sprites, and not wanting to leave the game in its current state made me resume work on that one. Not complete yet but already awesome."

  • moving parallax on levels 4 and 6
  • 2P mode (I think this will be demanding on a real machine due to the added blits, though)
  • This port is special because it's not a transcode. It's running using the original 68000 code of the arcade game, with a lot of patches to redirect graphical & sound operations to the amiga side.
  • Thanks to my son Basile for helping me record this video (he's better at Geometry Dash but he did okay for a first play!)

Credits:

  • - JOTD: reverse engineering amiga port, graphics conversion
  • - no9: music tracks and sound remastering
  • - PascalDe73: amiga icon
  • - Data East: original code, sounds, music & graphics
  • - paraj,a/b & all tech experts @ EAB: support with amiga hardware quirks

Requirements:

  • - PAL A1200/A4000 with fast memory
  • - whdload installed
  • - 2 button joystick (keyboard also supported)

    1. There were a few really good arcade ports on Amiga but also really bad ones. Some were probably rushed while others from devs really strange 3rd party companies that made cheap software. Without the same restrictions of time and disk space many of these homebrews have been fantastic. Making games that took up memory and space were really expensive back in the day. Now people are doing it for free.

  5. True, original Amiga version was terrible, C64 version with its impressive combined sprite multiplex was better. Fingers crossed, it looks nice on the Amiga now too!

  8. last night i played the original amiga version via whdload on my 1200! It was a broken game with bad controls unplayable even with cheats...I thought that it would be nice if there was a new version and today i read this!!! I am looking forward for this one!

  10. Mmmyeah, I used to play Bad Dudes, you know when I was younger...I then moved on to Two Crude...wauw is all I can say! Two Crude sums up the 1990's for me! It replaces the 80's Rambo never ending ammo spray with the ultimate being badass...oh,let's pick up a car and throw at someone. Two Crude is so utterly sarcastic that you just have to love it! Yet, most fellow nerdsters have never heard of Two Crude. Not yet released on an Amiga.

  13. I don't understand all the hate for these older arcade conversions. A lot of these were unplayable But I didn't think dragon ninja wasn't bad especially when it was released In the late '80s. sure, looking at it from a 2025 perspective it looks terrible but back then I thought it was pretty good

  15. I've always loved the cover for this game, looks like someone tried to draw Tom Cruise from memory.

    1. Tom Cruise which would require serious dental work then!

  17. I liked the Amiga version, sure it was no coin up, and the games 2d plane makes it look crude compared to (coin up) Final Fight and SOR2 on console. Still, it was fun and the trailer roof fighting is just a fun idea that Íd love to see in more games. Crazy fun times. Won´t say no to an upgrade, but a second playable character (bad babes?) would be cool;)

  18. Cool stuff. I wonder how to eliminate the slowdowns during those busy scenes though. Even when running the game on Amiberry on a Pi5 (120x faster than an A4000 with 68040) the slowdowns still happen.

  19. Ottima conversione !!

  20. I always thought the original Dragon Ninja was a great conversion for the Amiga. I mean. The people who saying it isnt... have they ever played double dragon, eswat, rolling thunder?... the list goes on. Anyways... im glad this port is now available.

  21. Looks arcade perfect. I think the original amiga game was well done, it was in 7 colour dual playfeild mode but still looked nice.

    1. Did a color count, confirm that it's running at 100-150 colors on screen at the same time like the arcade. FPS can be a bit wonk though when there are two dozen enemies on the screen.

  22. For a top Amiga game, this would have required a skilled coder, a good graphics artist, and enough time. I believe Bad Dudes on the A500 could have been better, maybe with more disks.
