Wee Ninja - A WIP Mario style platformer for the 5200 by Playsoft gets an early download

Playsoft have released a number of games over the years, from Blowsub on the Atari 5200, to the Atari 8bit hack of Donkey Kong by Darryl1970. Well it's time for the Atari 5200 to get a new game announcement, as Playsoft is working on a high quality Mario styled platformer of 'Wee Ninja'. A game in which your character can headbutt blocks, collect power ups and even throw ninja death squares at enemies. To coincide with this news, provided below is the latest work in progress footage by Saberman.

And here's the latest from the developer. "I've been working on a Mario style platformer for the 5200 and wanted to release a WIP build now I have the first 4 levels put together. I'd appreciate any feedback on the playability before I go forward. It is not intended to be an exact Mario clone but it does owe everything to Mario. There are 3 power-ups, found by headbutting bricks; red ninja is invincible for a time, black ninja can throw ninja death squares at enemies and blue ninja can poke them with a stick. If you are hit in ninja mode, you revert back to normal rather than lose a life. Also in ninja mode, headbutting bricks destroys them".

And finally to finish off the article, the developer also went on to say "Some pipes can be entered to reveal secret locations. Some enemies can be squashed by jumping on them; shell enemies leave an empty shell that you can launch by touching them. If you reveal a heart, collect it for an extra life. It's a 64K ROM (using @Bryan's M.U.L.E. bank switching scheme) and can be played on real hardware with the Atarimax Ultimate SD; it should also work with the BackBit Pro. It runs on the Altirra emulator (use the .car file to avoid selecting the ROM type). If it doesn't, you need to update to a more recent version. The music is adapted from the Super Boy 3 game on the MSX, itself a Mario clone. Thanks go to @Beeblebrox and @RB5200 for their help and encouragement".

  1. This is the best atari 8 bit game I've picked up in a while. Many of the newer games are impressive for some reason (graphics sounds etc) but not fun at all. When I say fun I mean like pounding on your joystick fun that brings to mind the Atari version of Zybex or Tempest 2000 on the Jag... this is such a game. A clone but it has a charm all its own. Please finish this game. I have to wonder if you could go back in time with this game, Tempest Extreme, and Time wizard and a few others would the fate of Atari's consoles "played" out different?

  2. Looks good enough to be a 7800 title. Nice!
