Bubble Bobble is getting a C64 remaster and it looks GOOD!

I've just been informed through Facebook, that if you were a huge fan of Taito's Bubble Bobble in the Arcades or at home, will be pleased to know that at some point in the near future, Dave's Retro Force will be releasing a graphically superior version of 'Bubble Bobble Remastered' for the Commodore 64. A new version which is getting great viewer feedback such as "The C64 version is the one I played the most, and this is looking fantastic" and "Wow, great job! Pretty close to the arcade version ❤". To coincide with this news, you can check out the latest footage from the game, as well as the latest developments.

And here's the latest. "Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered - WIP 4 - We're getting there!🐉✨. A lot has happened since the last update! Basically all of the core graphics work is now complete. All collectible items have been redrawn and recolored, many discrepancies with the arcade version have been fixed, and the info panel has been completely redesigned. Even the font has been replaced with the one from the original coin-op for added authenticity. Can you spot all the new stuff?"

"The overall look is now much closer to the arcade classic, while staying within the tight C64 constraints. Some visual compromises were necessary, of course, but we’ve pushed the old hardware pretty far while keeping the original engine intact! There’s still work to be done, mainly on the programming side to fix some graphical behaviors that are currently hardcoded. And who knows… maybe we’ll even find a way to improve the gameplay too. Let us know what you think—and thanks for following the project! 🐉💚🟡"

And that's all there is to say about the game so far, but make sure to check out the main page (here), or Dave's other remasters (here)

  2. It looks amazing! I played this game a lot back in the 80s - one of the best C64 arcade conversions. I really like the idea of remastering old games. Why not improve them with the new tools and knowledge available now to enjoy them more? Not sure if this game lends itself to having an editor where new caves could be created, that would be extra special!

  3. I preferred the original c64 version over the Amiga version, both of which I have 'played to death'. This remake looks awesome!

  5. It was an excellent port already anyway ,now it becomes astonishingly beautiful for a c64 game.
What more could someone can ask for without being and enormously ungrateful?
Maybe that all this enhancement could be done in such a way so that in the far future terms and when/if someone reverse engineer and attempt a level editor somehow all these graphical improvements could be utilized /integrated into also .
To have "a future proof" usability for future Bubble Bobble c64 potential projects .

    1. Well if i had checked https://daves-retro-forge.itch.io/bubble-bobble-c64-remastered page , i would had realized that the one of the 2 guys beside the project -the one responsible for "Disassembling and Coding"- is actually "geon" (the one i linked in my previous post https://github.com/geon/bb-construction-set ).So a Bubble Bobble c64 level Editor could actually be a possibility.(Or even a c64 "Bubble Bobble Lost Cave" ?)

  6. Looks promising, however, I already liked the c64-version of Bubble Bobble as hell. It was/is one of the games which I played ALOT, also with my friends. Like stated before, a Level-Editor would be very very nice. I dunno if this is possible, but if, it would be worth a huge donation from me. Cheers, Firefox
